I thought this was interesting because typically it is found that short chain fatty acids are lower then healthy controls, while this study which was in vitro found that there was no difference between patients and healthy controls. The contradicting evidence might be explained by how inflammation from the patient interacts with the microbiome in vivo or within the host, and there are other studies which suggest this, and that is, that inflammation itself can cause dysbiosis of the microbiome, and then likely affect how it ferments fiber, and an in vitro study that doesn't account for this variable, would not show that. So this study may not be enough to tell you exactly what is happening in vivo, but may still lead to a better understanding, its likely the case that, ibd patients still have issues digesting fibers, in the real world.
