I do *love* my Droid. It's rather amazing.
I'd recommend playing with it in store though. Or... really utilizing the 30 days you have to play with the phone and return it if you don't care for it. lol, and as much as I love it, I'd also say wait a little bit if you can. Verizon is rolling out 3 new Android phones soon as I've heard from a friend who's a manager for a Verizon store. So... there will be more choices soon.
For me, the Droid wouldn't have been my first choice. I like smaller, lighter phones. The Droid definitely is neither... lol... and not quite so "cute" either. It's cuter now with my purple case on it though.
But I got used to that stuff pretty quickly, and now, it feels weird to hold a small, feather light phone. Like I said, I haven't used the physical keyboard at all, so I can't comment on that. Some people have told me they don't understand the complaints and love it. I suspect they have smaller fingers. lol. Some people told me it's a learning curve to deal with it, but one they got pretty quickly. Some just plain HATE it. The virtual one is great to me, and all the keyboard apps that give me a choice of which I prefer is nice. However, that's me, and I deal pretty well with virtual keyboards.
Android in general is a great platform that I'm stoked for. I love how much I can customize it to suit me and my needs. It's awesome.
Battery life hasn't been a problem for me at all. The first couple days, I was afraid it would be, but since it went though a couple charge cycles and "conditioned," it's been great. On a light use day, I'll end the day with about 80-90% of my battery. Medium use, about 60-70%. Even with my heaviest use during the honeymoon phase with it, I wasn't really getting below 50% too much. Like yesterday for example... I hadn't charged it Saturday night at all. Gave it a quick, less than an hour charge Sunday morning. Then used it all day yesterday and a LOT last night. I went to bed with it at 20%, which isn't too terrible for almost 48 hours with only and hour of charge time. And I keep my GPS up all the time. Disable Wifi and Bluetooth, but not GPS. With lighter use, I have gone two full days on a single charge.
So yeah... I guess that answers enough.
Edit: The one thing I'm LOVING about it over Blackberries I've seen seem silly, but they're convenience factors to me. Well, actually, I love a lot, including running multiple apps. It's sweet. I think my phone usually has about 4-5 browser windows up at a time, like I would if I was surfing the net on my computer. BUT, not my point here... lol. A lot of Blackberries I've seen won't do ANYTHING, including making calls, when the battery level gets below 20% or whatever. That's annoying as all heck to me. Heck, my friend's Blackberry wouldn't even do anything on the charger when her battery level was too low. Didn't make sense to me at ALL since it was on the charger. And I don't have to reboot it and remove the battery daily like I've seen with a lot of Blackberries.
