UC diagnosis changed to Crohn's

I was diagnosed with severe UC in 2009. Had emergency surgery (4 total ) in 2012. The surgeon left a section of the colon with ulcers due to how ill I was and now I have strictures. Sent to see specialist who now is saying Crohn's. I was hoping for J pouch surgery now they want to remove it all. I am so confused as to what my true diagnosis is. My GI here says reports show UC not CD. What should I do now?

Cutting is not the right "first choice" for CD. The disease will just re manifest somewhere else. You need to get you immune system in line. The pathologies of UC and CD are different and really only a skilled GI will be able to accurately diagnose which disease is affecting you from scope and biopsy results. It is possible you have both. Although not common a dual diagnosis isn't impossible. The chances greaten if you are also suffering from other immune based issues ( arthritis, psoriasis etc). Find a good GI ( Gastroenterologist) and let him/her do their magic.

It's very common for people to be diagnosed UC as early CD absent small bowel involvement presents similar pan colonic ulcerations. It is often only after unique CD manifestations occur, usually strictures, that the disease is re classified as CD. Happened for me and others I know. It can take many years for this to play out. 17 for me.
If you have a stricture then 95% likely you have always had CD. I would try all medical therapies before surgery, however the stricture may not be reversible and that would require surgery.
Good luck.
