Ultrasound scan

Hey everyone!
So a bit about me first. I'm 20 and from the UK and I haven't had a diagnosis but have been referred to a GI and seen him once a bit before Christmas. He advised that I should do a stool sample to test for IBD and book for a ultrasound scan which I have done :)
Since then my conditions have been getting worse and have not heard anything about my ultrasound scan. I was just wondering how long others have had to wait for one? Thanks :)

Hi Becks, welcome to the forum! I'm in the UK too, and my GI actually referred me for an ultrasound himself. It took about a month for the letter to actually come through, then the appointment was the week after! Ultrasounds are usually quite over-subscribed, but if you are worried that you haven't heard anything, just give the radiology department a call and make sure they have you on the system as waiting for an appointment! Good luck!

Thankyou! It will have been 4 weeks tomorrow since I saw the GI so that's made me feel better. Was just getting a bit worried as he said the wait wouldn't be long (maybe his and my idea of long are different haha :p). Will just carry on looking out for the post :)

Hi and welcome. You wait about a month for an apt., by post, then the actual apt. is about a month after that. Then the results can take a further month. But if you feel unwell, please either see your G.P. get in touch with the G.I.dept. at your local hospital,or go to the outpatients.Don't take risks with your health.I hope you feel better soon.
Last year it took almost exactly a year for me to have four tests and diagnoses.About three months for each, one after the other.Waiting can be stressful but please try not to worry to much.It doesn't help.

Good old NHS.

My GP sent me for an ultrasound which I had about a week later. But that was when they were treating it as cancer.
Oh yes fair play to them, when they think its the big C they move pretty rapidly then... About the only time they do tho, because they kinda have to. I must say that I would not like to be without it tho for all it's faults.. ☺

Thankyou all for your replies and help :) it's nice to know the wait is normal, just had no idea what the 'normal' was :p

Hi Becks, I hope you've had your scan by now!

At my previous hospital they didn't do bowel ultrasound so I always had to wait months for an MRI. At my new hospital, I saw my doctor and then got a letter for an ultrasound a week later, the appointment is tomorrow, which is almost exactly a month from seeing the specialist.

I'm interested to see what it's like, how long it takes, what they can see etc, do you have any info on that? I actually work in ultrasound for my job, but in a different part of the hospital, so I'm going to be an annoying patient and ask lots of questions the whole time. They sent me a leaflet but its generic for abdo ultrasound so says they look at the liver, kidneys, etc which I don't think is right.

I'm not going to be much help to you, but when I had ultra sound last year it was AFTER MRI,colonoscopy.calprotectin etc......Long story short, the ultrasound showed abnormality in my gall bladder.I hadn't had any problems in that area.Had the G.B. removed and went for follow up 4wks later. There was nothing wrong with the GB at all, except there was a "tuck" which looked suspicious. At least you know what questions to ask, which is always a good thing.Good luck. Please let us know how it goes.

It only took about 15 - 20mins,no need to strip, just rolled pants down and blouse up.No discomfort except gel was cold.hahaha.

Hey! Like said above its very quick and no discomfort (just lots of jelly) basically exactly what I imagined an ultrasound to be like. I'm not sure exactly what parts they can see unfortunately but it seemed very thoughough.
Unfortunatly the ultrasound didn't pick anything up so I'm now having an MRI on Wednesday
Hope this helps and you get on okay :)

Just had my scan. It was only about 10 minutes. He only looked at my right side, my previous MRI about 2.5 years ago only showed disease in the terminal ileum so he seemed to just be checking around there. At first he said he couldn't see anything, and then he said he found a quite small area of active disease right at the ileocecal valve which would probably account for my symtoms.

I've been feeling really fatigued with abdominal tenderness, lotf of bloating and nausea for the last two weeks, but I know symtoms and disease state don't seem to correlate that well with crohn's so I was worried about being told there was nothing wrong with me. At least I should get some change to treatment now, I'm seeing my doctor next on the 26th.

I've got quite a large tummy (classic apple shaped) so he really had to dig in there to get good views, feeling really tender now. Thanks for your support guys!
