Undiagnosed, embarrassed & scared

Hi everyone and thanks for having me here

This is my story:

I have had what I always thought was IBS (self-diagnosed) for about 13 years (I'm 33). I have always just dealt with it.

In the last year it got worse and I went to see a gastroenterologist last October who said within 2 minutes of speaking to me that it wasn't IBS. He wanted to do a colonoscopy and endoscopy. Since I didn't have insurance it was going to cost me $2k, so I just said I would carry on managing it.

Strangely after that it got lots better for ages. In the meantime I got insurance, but don't know if I'll ever be able to claim through it as I suppose this is a pre-existing, albeit undiagnosed, condition.

Then my symptoms suddenly got worse than they have ever been. Going to the bathroom around 8-10 times a day and getting pain either in left or right lower abdomen which is strong enough to make me double over. It is getting quite difficult to carry on with my daily life. I am very fit and active but I am finding it difficult to run anymore, because of the pain and the jiggling around. I am finding it quite difficult to remain hydrated and the whole thing is horrible and embarrassing.

Around the same time my Dad got diagnosed with Crohns, after having problems for around 20 years.

I have made an appointment to see the gastroenterologist again, but he couldn't see me for 3 weeks. He was really great last time I saw him so I am just going to tell him about insurance and Dad's diagnosis and beg for his help.

Do you think this sounds like Crohns?
Thanks for listening

Hey there and a big welcome to the forum :) I'm sorry to hear you are having issues, and your Dad too. The symptoms you are describing could be down to Crohn's, but it could be something else causing them too, so it's good that you have a doctor's appointment. Have you lost weight at all?

Greetings and you're not alone. It amazes me how long some of the people on this site have dealt with issues as long as they have. The other member was right...follow up with your DR. If it doesn't happen fast enough, here are some other things to try;
> armed with your new insurance, find a teaching hospital near you and visit them
> get to know a "charge nurse" anywhere! Dr's may be specialists but it will surprise you to learn how knowledgeable nurses are :) Don't expect a diagnosis but you will get the right answers
> talk to your personal health care professionals about alternatives to medication
Good luck! PLAY HARD, LOVE BIG AND BE WELL!
p.s. I have read that it can be hereditary
