just got diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome on top of my crohns, doc gave me bentyl, but im also taking 55mg pred, caltrate, 200mg fluconazole, prilosec, and percocet. my question is will the bentyl give me any weird reactions with all my other drugs?

Hi there I take Bentylol once in a while but you may feel drowsy especially if you take it with Percocets. I have never taken that combo before. Perc's usually do the trick. Try taking the Bentyl without percocets. If it dont work then most likely not spasms.

i would love to get off the perks but im in too much pain without them. i only use them when needed but still worried.

Hi Carey,
I was recently diagnosed with IBS on top of crohn's and given Bentyl as well. My IBS diagnosis came because my colonoscopy showed my Crohn's to be in remission. I am curious about your diagnosis. I see that you are on pred, so i am assuming you are in a flare? I did not think you could be diagnosed with IBS if you are in a flare. Am I misunderstanding this?

Hey cookie you are right, IBS is a syndrome and IBD is a disease, I would think she has been possibly misdiagnosed? We all know about that. But if it works...

the situation with the pred is i have been between 40-60mg pred everyday for a yr. because i have been on such a high dose for so long my doc has me on a slow taper. my last colonoscopy showed that my crohns is in remission, so im tapering down 5mg pred a month. about being misdiagnosed i have no clue. all i know is even though the crohns is under controll im still in a lot of pain, every time i eat my stomach extends, i throw up, and am basically miserable.

Carey,

Bentyl antagonizes acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors (anticholinergic), relaxing the smooth muscle in your gut and inhibiting painful (bradykinin- and histamine-induced) spasms. Bentyl has similar side effects to Benadryl (also an anticholinergic medication): headache, insomnia, heart palpitations, dry mouth, constipation, and urinary retention. Your pharmacist should be able to tell you all the medication interactions. Avoid other sedating medications like Percocet.

I had to stop taking Bentylol (not Bentyl)...it used to minorly help some of my spasms (what makes sense - being an anti-spasmatic drug), but it would not help my flares.
Anyways my one family doctor cut me off of it after I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. That's a side effect you should know about: it definitely raises the blood pressure. The other horrible side effect I had was blurry vision.
