Potentially starting Remicade -- anybody with "mild" Crohn's taking it?

I am on Remicade and I consider my Crohn's to be mild. Earlier this year, I was flaring for most of the winter and spring, and part of summer. However, this is only my second flare up since my original diagnosis back in 2012. My symptoms when I flare are 2 to 3 loose bowel movements per day with...

    New to this...

NuttyGuts, Yeah, I love to run and keep active, then again, I'm young (I'm a junior in high school by the way). I run for my school's cross country team, and in fact, our season just ended yesterday. I'm not a super fast runner, my best 5k time is 22:34, but hope to get better. Thank God for...

    New to this...

NuttyGuts, I am doing very well. I have been doing a lot of running lately, and I will probably do some lifting too. I play baseball in the summer, and I want to be good and ready for next year. How have you been doing lately?

Unfortunately, there is no "organic" method in treating Crohn's disease. You need medications in order to treat any ongoing inflammation, and you have to stay on those meds even if you are in remission, otherwise you will flare. My disease was under control, and I thought I didn't need...

Almost constant flare ups, after years of remission

Irritated, I know that going to the doctor is not a fun thing to do, but you should really go in to see one. I would look at it this way. Do you want to continue to go on and feel sick every day, or would you risk going into the doctor, take medication, and feel like yourself again? It is not...

    Imuran/Azathioprine/6-MP Support Group

Yes, it's very possible to have years of remission. Before Remicade, while I was on Pentasa, I had about six years of remission. That was when my disease was very mild. Hopefully the Remicade will keep me in remission that long or even longer.

    Imuran/Azathioprine/6-MP Support Group

The top down approach is what I hear a lot of doctors do. The belief is to get it under control sooner with the biologics and prevent future complications that could lead to surgery. If you feel good with azathioprine and Remicade, I don't see why you would have to have surgery. I guess the only...

    Imuran/Azathioprine/6-MP Support Group

NuttyGuts, yeah, I am now done with my loading doses and get infusions once every two months. Now as for blood work, I am not sure. When everything was under control and normal before remicade, I used to get my blood work done once every six months. Lately, we have been checking once every two...

NuttyGuts, wow, that sounded rough. Hopefully those hard masses in your abdomen will get better. I will admit, the first infusion is the worse. I personally do not get any side effects from the Remicade. Anyway, I had an appointment with my GI today. He decided that Remicade is my long term...

Recently diagnosed - biologics or immunosuppressants?

I would like to share my experience. I was officially diagnosed back in January after a colonoscopy, and my doctor prescribed me 6mp (basically the same as azathioprine). I gave it about 6-7 months and it just did not do anything for me. Then my doctor said it was time to move onto biologics...

    I love to sleep 😊

I get about 8 hours of sleep per night. About 9 on the weekends. The only problem is that I have to go to bed at 8:30 or 9 on weeknights, because I have to get up at 5:30 to catch my 6:15 bus for school. My first class starts at 7:25. I go to bed about 11 and get up around 8 during weekends.

    Don't know what to do

My game plan is to stay on remicade as long as it keeps me in remission. You get your first remicade infusion, then your next one in two weeks, then four weeks (these are your loading doses), then every eight weeks for maintenance. As far as I know, you most likely won't be on it for the rest of...

    Don't know what to do

NuttyGuts, I am glad I could help. This truly is a wonder drug. Plus, it is good that you are on azathioprine at the same time since it prevents antibodies forming to the remicade. The first infusion is always the longest. I was a little nervous at first, but once they got the IV in me, it was a...

    Resting heart rate

When I went in for my last remicade infusion and they were checking all my vitals, my resting rate was about 62 beats per minute. I should mention though, I run quite frequently.

    Don't know what to do

This is my one month update. I am doing awesome! No symptoms at all in the last month, and I feel a lot better since my first infusion. My cross country running is also been very good. In fact, I had a meet yesterday and I ran a personal record. Thank you guys for all your support!

Do you live a "normal" life?

I am in high school and I am very active. I run cross country, play baseball, and I am involved with several clubs at my school. I live a very normal life thanks to remicade.

Does anyone else's feaces sink after a colonoscopy?

Your feces should normally sink. If they float, that means there is a higher concentration of fat in your feces.

    Always Tired

I understand that you don't want to start a biologic, but the biologics are some of the best drugs to treat crohn's. I was on prednisone and 6mp, and after four months on being both drugs, I just could not taper off the prednisone. That meant that the 6mp was just not working. My next option was...
