    Methotrexate and folic

Just answered other thread - but yep, my son just started 5mg weekly folic acid the day after he takes MTX. When I asked the doc, she said he could do 1mg daily instead if we preferred. Asked the pharmacist too, either way doesn't really matter, I guess.

    Folic acid question

Thought it odd too, everyone seems to be daily, but my son's doc gave him 5mg weekly too, the day after MTX. We just started 2 weeks ago. Doc said he could do 1mg daily instead, but he chose to do it weekly (he's 15). No issues so far.

New diagnosis for 15 year old son

Sounds so similar to my son, he was 8 then. We've had success with Humira alone, but have done combo (before and just restarted), and combo with MTX is recommended to induce remission. Approaching it strongly at first is recommended for kids, who need to still grow. I hear you with the risk...

    EGD+C, difficult insurance

He tolerated the oral, lower 15mg, dose fine. Doc probably not happy with me, in that we risk it not doing anything. Weight-wise, he's closer to 20 than 25 anyway. I guess 25 is usually done as shot instead of pills because of the nausea. But I argued about the goal, not to induce remission but...

    Questions about MTX(and Simponi)

I'm curious about what her "low" dose of MTX is? My son is 5'3" and 113 lbs, and doc wanted 25mg/wk, but his weight is closer to 20mg, and I was so afraid of side effects, I pushed for just 15mg/wk to add to his Humira. Risk is it not doing anything, but we can bump up. Oddly, the doc...

    EGD+C, difficult insurance

Frustrating! GI says 25mg is right for his weight. I'd said I wanted to be cautious at first, then ramp up. We have some busy weekends ahead, so it's hard to balance it. Tempting to do 15mg anyway! Maybe we should've opted for the shots instead of the pills. He wasn't thrilled about another...

    NSAID damage

I've heard the same, no NSAIDs for IBD They are a gastric irritant, generally. My son used to take a lot of motrin before dx, he was always sick or in pain, which probably didn't help his IBD development any... My (nonIBD) husband was in the hospital just a couple months ago with a few...

    Lack of growth :(

ditto on the endo. I joke that they never DO anything, but they will (growth hormone) when warranted. It's at least worth checking in and discussing his personal growth expectation. Ask the endo to order a bone age hand xray, and do before the appt, so you can discuss the results at the appt...

    EGD+C, difficult insurance

Thanks again! I was wrong about him not having previous ulcers in EGD, so if insurance ever gets around to the appeal, we'll probably have to take him back in. At least he doesn't have to the cleanout part, but still anesthesia risk, etc. sigh! Insurance is taking its time with the appeal for...

    EGD+C, difficult insurance

Thank you all for your thoughts! Scope went well, always stressful, he was not a happy camper of course. Some ulcers in the rectum and some inflammation in the ascending colon near ileum, but otherwise looked great. Didn't do the EGD, despite doc calling last minute, but he had no issues there...

    EGD+C, difficult insurance

Hi, My son goes in for a checkup EGD (maybe) and colonoscopy tomorrow. I would appreciate your good thoughts for us. His Humira levels have been lower than target (6/8) the last six months or so, but no antibodies. Despite 5+ years successfully on Humira, he is in puberty, so it's a roller...

    Nose Bleeds

I get nosebleeds frequently. Had my nose cauterized as a kid, painful, but worked. Now I use petroleum jelly and often run a humidifier at night. Sorry about the migraines too, whole family gets them here. Be sure to stay hydrated, an antihistamine might work if it's an allergic trigger...

    Crohn's and Growth Hormone Therapy

Hi, we check in with an endocrinologist each year. The goal was addressing the IBD, then the growth. My son finally resumed growing and started puberty once Humira worked and has not needed GHT. He was 2 years delayed in bone age for a long time. Best of luck on Remicade!

    Influenza A & Crohns

My son got the flu a few years ago, despite having the vaccination, though I think that helped keep it milder. It hit his asthma hard, mainly, ended up in ER at 3am for that. He was put on tamiflu with no issues and was fine in a few days. Hope it's not the flu though! Good luck.

8yo failed Remicade today; talk of Humira

Sorry to hear about the reaction to Remicade. My son moved to Humira after developing antibodies to Remicade. He's been on it successfully for 5 years now at the 2-week interval dose. Started out on the child-dose but moved up to the adult dose once his weight was reached. He overlapped with 6mp...

    Success Stories

    Diagnosing 10yr old

That is SO awful, I'm sorry. Is he nauseous too? Could there be a problem with his vision or inner ear? Food allergy? Maybe migraine? Best of luck.

    Newly Diagnosed 9yrs old boy

Welcome and I'm sorry to hear of your son's dx. My son presented similarly at the same age, but is now 15 and in remission on Humira. Best of luck to you, it's a rough road, hang in there!

Newly Diagnosed CD - Advice / Treatment Options

I'm guessing he's had a followup dose now? It does take awhile, but I hope things are already improving for your son. Just jumping in with another account of Remicade success. We started with 6mp at first (age 9) and shouldn't have bothered, my son got a 2nd abscess and had IV antibiotics for 8...
