    Humira with Azathioprine

We did humira 6mp combo for a year, doc wanted to add mix because of research, but I decided against it for now. To me, research is still undecided, we are cutting edge. Hard to know what to do.

    Daughter being switched to Humira

Welcome! My son had similar story, now 4.5 years success on humira. Our insurance requires mail order through specialty pharmacy too. Nurses did loading dose with pen, was awful, so we do syringe, not complicated at all, beyond creep factor. Humira sponsors a home nurse to train you. Good luck!

    Dropping albumin levels?

What's the latest? Sorry so late to the topic. My son's albumin was stubbornly low while on Humira pediatric dose, we added 6mp for a year and the protein levels recovered. He's now only on the adult Humira dose. No amount of supplement helped us, had to get the IBD under control. As an aside...

    Gum issues related to IBD?

Was just wondering about this, as my son's gums are taking longer than normal to stop being inflamed after getting his braces off. Dentist is watching it for now, but suggested maybe eventually cutting off excess. ugh.

    Any help would be grateful

This sounds like how my son was pre-dx, the GI was surprised even. Scopes with biopsy is the definitive way to dx. So sorry about your daughter. Hang in there! In the meantime, you can add a comprehensive multivitamin (one with iron and trace minerals like selenium), add boost/shakes, cut out...

Crohn's newbie ... feeling scared and frustrated

Welcome and so sorry to hear about your daughter. The road is a rocky one. It's good she responded to remicade (normal now to try it first for her age, not just fistulizing IBD). It could be the steroid that boosted it. It's currently recommended to do a combo for about a year or so to jumpstart...

    Fecal Calprotectin Test Insurance Appeal

bumping this cause it just happened to me... The FC was always covered before but without any notification is suddenly 'experimental'. I appealed, it was denied. A 'family medical doctor' reviewed the case, um, why not a specialist? Every item they state is in contradiction to my appeal letter's...

    Talk to me about Humira

I think many insurances require trying Remicade before Humira for kids, but that may have changed. I have a bit of a needle phobia myself, it took a long time to get comfortable giving him the shot. The medication does burn, but it is so, so worth it, it's been 4 years now. I use the syringe...

Opinions on using Biologics from a scared mama

Yep, biologics are unnerving, but it's wonderful when they work. 6mp was not enough for my son and his GI was anti pred for kids, too many bad side effects. My son has been successfully on Humira 4 years so far.

    Adding Methrotrexate

It's usually best to try the medication route before deciding on surgery. Adding MTX for a year or so is common and should boost the Humira. The combo idea works because it attacks the problem from different sides - one suppresses the immune system creating cytokines, one mops up the excess...

    Growth hormone therapy

We haven't tried it yet. We check in once/year with the endocrinologist and a bone age xray. My son is 14, 59" and 2 years delayed in bone age (along with pubertal markers and height). The key is the bone age, his doc feels he'll grow continue to grow past 18 even, because of that delay, as long...

    Do you use a probiotic?

Here's a couple links with better info about which probiotics Primal Defense includes, seems I'm more regular, less bloated, level energy, sick less often. http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/p/garden-of-life-primal-defense-ultra-90-veggie-caps/gu-1062#.VvBcH3dZV_I...

    What to do for flare?

It's confusing, but a flare is more a brief fall out of remission (ie from stress) than symptoms from uncontrolled IBD. Not sure why IBD wasn't diagnosed with "massive inflammation". Did they test for (new) C diff infection? Or test for Celiac disease? In the short term, you can try to boost...

    Do you use a probiotic?

My son was on Culturelle for a long time, easy to mix in. Didn't seem to help any. Now we do VSL#3 after he's been on antibiotics. For myself, I take Primal Defense weekly. Seems to help more for IBS than IBD, but also doesn't hurt any.

6 weeks since son's diagnosis -- how do you handle the emotions?

Welcome, sorry to hear of your son. Same, it took many months to get through the stages of grief, lots of shower-crying, and also an introvert. Helped me to get as much information as possible, to be the advocate your child needs. You will find acceptance eventually and a new normal, which...

    Rejected Humira, Low prealbumin.. Help!

Sorry for the late reply, any response yet? I don't know how low is considered urgent or not, just comparing the numbers. His jumped around a bit before going over the minimum normal. It is so frustrating, my son seemed fine too, but must have had some inflammation where protein is absorbed...

    Movicol not working?

Not much advice, sorry, it does seem a strange thing to try. What symptoms? I think while waiting for tests, it's usually recommended to try a simpler diet: low fiber, lactose free to see if that helps. Could also try Ensure for low-weight, add a multivitamin, no ibuprofen.
