So my son had his first mtx injection this afternoon at about 4:00. It's now almost 9:00. He said he feels ok, he just got into bed....if he were to experience any side effects, do you think they would have started by now? Or too soon to tell? I'm praying he tolerates this drug without the nasty side effects. I just can't take much more.:wine:

It really depends. My younger daughter had the worst side effects the next day. My older daughter was nauseous within hours when we started MTX. We then moved her dose to right before bed and that helped.

It really depends on the kid - some kids find that taking it after school is the right time. Others have to take it before bed and on a weekend night. Others have no issues and take it on a school night.

Hang in there!!

I just wanted to chime in with support. We did our first MTX dose (oral) 5 weeks ago, and I was terrified. I still watch him like a hawk for a few hours after each dose.

Fortunately for us, my son doesn't seem to react to it much. He gets it every Thursday night. He's usually a little tired on Friday and Saturday, but that's about it.

I hope that your son tolerates it well, too!

With shots Ds was fine that evening but acted like he had the flu the next day or two
With pills no issues at all

When my son was on MTX injections (for 2 years), he felt nauseous within minutes of getting the injection. It would lessen with a night's sleep, but he would still feel somewhat nauseous until around lunchtime the following day. He's on a lower, oral dose now with his Remicade, and no noticeable side effects. Glad everything is "so far, so good" with today's injection for your son!

My daughter only rarely has side effects from MTX. When she has been nauseated, it's been within an hour. She's sometimes a little dizzy the next day, but nothing too bad. I think if your son hasn't had any problems so far, you're probably good. Fingers crossed that he makes it through the night and tomorrow without no problems!

Great! How did the injection itself go?

He handled it better than expected, he was very nervous but he sat still and it was quick. While my husband and I were being trained by the nurse my son met with chop's child/life counselor and they came up with a plan. The plan was mostly for him not to look and for him to hold the buzzy on his arm....whatever, but it worked and he managed well.
