Hi ChaoticKylee,
I don't have this syndrome, but two people that I know do. (They have a much milder form than you, though). My understanding of it is that the oral allergy is an extension of an environmental allergy. For example, one friend has a reaction to raw nectarines because he is allergic to birch pollen. This reaction is worse in the spring when the pollen is worse. He might be able to tolerate nectarines if they are cooked. The other person has reactions to many foods. Once she read the following article the reactions made much more sense to her and she could anticipate what foods to avoid. The article also discusses why some food allergies might not show up with the usual testing. Here is a link to the article about it: http://www.calgaryallergy.ca/Articles/English/Oral_Food_Allergy.htm

One of the reasons that I became interested in the article is because it discusses food families. Because of the food elimination diet that I am on, I know that if a food is in the same family, I can probably eat it without any symptoms.

I certainly would view your allergy as very serious. I don't think that anyone can predict if or when you will have a more serious reaction. The article suggests that a person with symptoms such as yours carry an EpiPen.

My sister has regular allergies and I believe very mild oral allergy syndrome. In most cases it is not considered as dangerous as allergies, but if your throat is swelling my non-professional opinion is that is grounds for an epi-pen.

Last I heard the theory was that it involved pollens on the fruit, so most people who reacted to say fresh peaches could eat canned without reacting (assuming they don't have a "regular" peach allergy).

Yep, I am allergic to birch pollen. I cant handle raw apple, peaches, pears, plums, cherries, and nectarines. Cooked/canned is alright though.

This may actually be what causes my mouth ulcers. I know that mouth ulcers are an extracolonic condition for many people with UC, but I haven't been able to explain why. *shrug* Just a thought, though.

I can't eat apples, pears, honeydew, cherries, tomatoes, or avocado unless it's super ripe. I also have to make sure any banana I eat has lots of brown spots on the peel. But like Lydia, anything cooked or from a can is fine.

Hi, I know this is an old thread, but I had to comment! I too have oral allergy syndrome among all the other allergies and intolerances. I react to all fruit and some veggies. Have you found any relief using antihistamines?

I also have oral allergy syndrome. Unfortunately, my body's response to apples is anaphylactic. To the original poster, if your throat swells you should carry an epipen. I am allergic to birch and ragweed so I am careful with the foods on those lists but so far it's just apples that I've had a bad reaction to.

I have had oral allergy syndrome since childhood. I had it until last week that is. I will explain...but first let me tell you there was no fresh fruits or vegetables that I could eat without my lips getting welts itchy inside my ears throat tongue and cheeks. It was horrible I love fruits and veggies. I am telling you the truth I've been cured and I am desperate to tell someone so they might also benifit with what I have taken. It is not a joke. I was told by a friend that with my depression ocd adhd and anxiety that I might have a magnesium deficiency. So I bought some magnesium oxide...it didn't work. After researching I found magnesium oxide is poorly absorbed. The best kind is slow mag magnesium chloride as it is delayed release and absorbed deeper in the intestines where as the mag oxide is broke down before it can be absorbed. I have been taking the mag chloride 7 $ bottle from Amazon....and today I decided to eat a couple grapes...even at the risk of a itchy mouth they looked so good....and no itchy mouth happened. I was amazed. I do not take any other meds at all not even over the
counter I have done nothing different. I then thought wow that's weird and took a bite of a tomatoes my mom had brought over no itch nothing. I ate the whole thing. I was crying....I was so excited I tried a carrot fresh spinach an apple.....nothing. is it possible that oral allergy syndrome is related to magnesiim deficiency...or am I just a freak occurance. I thought if I could help one person I have been trying to get the word out.....and if someone could try it and tell me if it works for them too maybe this could be a real cure?

I haven't had allergy testing for two years and really dismissed the last one. I thought it was crazy that I could be allergic to plums, apples, pineapple and some others. So there I was in the middle of a flare for the first recognizable time (I'm newly diagnosed) and I had one plum a day for three days. On the third day my mouth got swollen up, I had ulcers all over the insides and my tongue had raised bumps and was in a lot of pain. I ended up leaving work early to go home and take some Benadryl! It did help but the ulcers stayed for quite a while. I don't touch plums now. And, I'm ready to get tested again so I can feel a little more confident about the others that I was in denial about!
