Hello All,
I'm new here. I was dxed with Crohn's in 2010 because I went from a 16min/2mile to a 20min/2mile in 3 months while running every day. I was in college and didn't take medication regularly until a year ago. I've taken 75mg of 6MP nearly every day! Right now I'm asymptomatic, however my now annual colonoscopy yesterday - active crohn's and my insides have not changed in a year. My doctor wants to start biological medications, but I'm really scared. My family lives far away and my friends all know I'm sick because we often go on day hikes and I need them to know in case something happens, but nothing ever does. I turn 25 in a few weeks and would like to get married and have a family in the foreseeable future. What questions should I ask my doctor when we talk about this next week?
Thanks you & God Bless,
C

You should make a list of your questions and concerns regarding treatment and biologics. Explain to your GI your future plans and ask how those will go along with his/her treatment plan. A lot of members get great results out of biologics but you should discuss any risks you fear as well as any other concerns with the GI so that you both are on the same page as far as treatment plan, testing, etc.

My son is 17 and had been on remicade for 2 years, he has also been on mtx for a year and a half but neither is stopping the disease from progressing. So we will soon have a discussion of the next steps. It is hard for me to come to terms with dropping remicade because even though disease has progressed it was a med that turned his symptoms around as far as stomach pain and so on.

One thing you should at least consider is a dietary change. Many people with Crohn's and UC see a lot of improvement on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which is similar to Paleo. There is information elsewhere on this forum about SCD. It sounded completely absurd to me, but worked better than we could possibly have believed.

Doctors are often not well-informed about dietary changes, but SCD was discussed in the January 2014 Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology (seven out of seven children with Crohn's saw considerable improvement on the diet).

Good luck!
