Abscess? Cyst? What is it?

Hi all,

Hope someone can give me some info here, my GP can't. For months now I've had a "swelling" just inside... well, you know.

It started out painless and reasonably small and wasn't bothering me in the slightest, but for the last 6 weeks or so it has been painful, sometimes bleeds and sometimes interferes with bowel movements.

My GP said it isn't likely to be an abscess because I would have a fever and my white cells would be up. He said it may be a thickening of the bowel, but I know it isn't. It's not thickened, it's filled with something hard because I think it burst once during a bowel movement. A white, waxy, fibrous looking thing came out, the pain was less than half what it was before and it was bleeding. It felt good.

Anyway, it obviously is not going to go on its own and being in the position that it is, everytime I sit down I'm making it worse. Sometimes I'll roll over and it'll be hugely painful. One time I squashed it so hard it woke me up from my sleep in the morning and I literally couldn't move for hours because it was so painful. That's the day it burst.

It's hard, swollen and painful and it will change shape depending on my position. If I sit upright, it'll go flat on the bottom, or if I lie back it'll mould itself in to a new shape. It's pretty big now, probably over 3 inches long and over an inch and a half wide.

I'm going to have to get an appointment with my gastro because my GP said he's not touching it. He said "it's probably something to do with your Crohn's". I was a little surprised actually because I thought that was fairly obvious.

I had a similar problem about 8 months ago where I had two small "lumps" filled with a clear fluid around the... the thing. I managed to get rid of them by squeezing them open, they eventually went. But those were on the outside, and this is WAY more painful, it's HUGE and I don't want to go making it worse.

I sometimes think I'm going to to go A&E and fake it a little, because it's so bloody painful. I mean it's not like it's an actual emergency, but if I have to see my gastro it's gonna take more than a month before I can see him, GP won't do it, A&E is the only option.

*sigh* :depressed:

lol, not really but my Crohn's would be so much better if I could just be free of this painful THING.

So, what do you think it actually is? Could it be infected? How do I tell if it is infected? Any home remedies to reduce its size?

Thanks everyone.

You need to have is looked at visually......If your GP isn't looking at it and doesn't know what it is, he needs to refer you to someone who does....Either a surgeon or your GI.

I think you should Google anal abscesses, fistulas, hemorrhoids, tags.....for pictures to compare.....There are quite a few medical examples on line. Also Google Sitz baths. That will help you keep the area clean...

Good luck......I hope you get some relief.

I had an abscess and it is not to be fooled with. It is best described as a boil like pus and if it burst it can have Peritonitis which can go into your blood stream. Pain like that you dont need to fake, I wouldnt hesitate, to make sure it is not a abcess. They will put you on antibotics too. Let us know how you are doing ok? Glad you found our forum, hang in there.

Mmmm, if I had to wait a month to see the GI and it was *really* affecting my day to day life with a lot of pain - I think I'd be faking it at the A&E as well there buddy. I'd want to have that thing looked at. Not sure how the emergency area works for you guys over there - but I'd ask for a GI consult if possible (I know - you are probably laughing at me because they don't do that stuff over there!). Either way, I'd figure out how to have it looked at so it doesn't get worse for you. Good luck - and let us know what they figure out!

I would go too. You never know about infections and that isn't fakeing. Its nine now hope your there now if not just go. Good Luck let us know how things go.

Hi everyone,

Ended up going to A&E after an excruciating experience. Had a bowel movement and when I went to stand up I realised I was in a massive amount of pain and I couldn't get up! Took me about 5 minutes to get off and then I had to limp, leg in hand, to the phone. It was AGANOSING!

The A&E nurse gave me some co codamol. Saw an A&E doctor, a surgeon and another doctor, they said it is an abscess and I'm going back in the morning to have surgery on it. They were going to keep me in overnight, but there is no surgical beds so if I go back in the morning I can have it removed in A&E.

I told them about my GP saying it probably isn't an abscess because my white cells were not up, I had no fever and didn't feel ill. They said my white cells wouldn't be up and I think something about it being a "localised infection", don't quote me. But they are sure it is an abscess and are going to give me general anesthetic tomorrow because they want to see whether there is a fistula attached to it.

I have to have a seton put in there while the hole heals up which is going to take a few weeks. I'm sure you probably know the procedure anyway.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll have some relief!

Oh man, I am so glad you went. The pain you must be in is crazy. I don't know how you tolerated it so long......Good luck, and I hope you get some relief.

It's amazing to me that we get so used to be uncomfortable one way or another we feel like we have to be unable to get up before we get seen to :(

So glad you did get seen to and it's finally being taken care of. I wonder if your gp will feel foolish? I don't mind them saying "I don't think it is but let's check it out" but he said it wasn't.

Okay, enough of me being negative. I really hope you feel better! :)

Glad you were able to go in and have it taken care of, i hope things stat feeling better soon!

Hi all,

Had my abscess taken out on Wednesday. The finding was "perianal abscess" and 2 anal fissures at 1 o'clock and 6 o'clock. It was a bit of a horrible experience to be honest; I've never had general anesthesia before so that was new to me and definitely something I don't want to have done again. They wanted to have a look inside with a camera but they were "limited by fecal matter"! I wasn't asked to prepare for a camera test though and that wasn't the main procedure. They said they couldn't find a fistula or anything so hopefully this isn't going to come back.

The anesthetist doctor said he'll give me something to start me off for 30 seconds, then he'll send me to sleep. I was pretty scared about having it done, I started feeling all floaty and bubbly and the room was starting to look all wavy like a cartoon dream. I can't remember getting put out, but the next thing I do remember was waking up in the recovery room, dizzy, tired and barely able to open my eyes. My throat was sore as hell because of the tube they stick in there and my blood pressure was pretty low, but at least the abscess was out.

I saw the district nurse yesterday who came to my house to repack the cavity and dress it. She had a little measuring stick and said it was 5 cm deep! I thought that sounded crazy but she was able to stick it in 5 cm.

Saw my local practice nurse today who repacked it and apparently it is now only 3 cm deep and 1.5 cm wide. I don't get how it can heal so quickly but she couldn't get it in any further. I'm a little surprised to be honest, but also glad if it really is healing that fast.

I'm still in pain but codeine and paracetamol take care of that. Codeine has made me constipated and had my first bowel movement today for 3 days, lol. Thought it was going to be painful but it wasn't, it wasn't even constipation actually.

I'm feeling weak and sweaty and my heart is going fast, but I think that's due to not eating much. I've only eaten two sandwiches yesterday, nothing today (it's 4pm) and only mcdonalds cheeseburgers on the day of surgery. I don't wanna eat much because of the constipation, but I'm starved so I'm going to have to get something now.

Thanks guys for being so supportive :).

G.

*edit* Just wanted to mention also, I didn't actually have my GP look at the abscess or have a feel of it so that's probably why he said it doesn't sound like one, not sure what he'd said if he'd actually examined it.
