When we was the Endo the other day he mentioned something about Imuran doing something to the ovaries in some women. I didn't quite catch what he said as l went blank after l heard the word Turner's Disease. I did see the register google adverse side effects but when he saw that l was watching he went off the page. I did ask the GI and he said it can happen but not to worry. Now that l'm thinking a bit more straight, l'm curious to know what can Imuran do to the ovaries?

MLP l know that lack of uterus is not caused by a drug.

He was saying if she does have ovaries that Imuran can sometimes do something to them.

Thanks for the info

I reviewed the monograph on Imuran at rxlist.com. There is nothing anywhere in this document that discusses any risk to a women's reproductive system although there is risk to unborn children and the drug should not be taken during pregnancy. So you may want to consider discussing this with your daughter so she is well informed on the subject.

I also did a pubmed search and found nothing reported in the literature to suggest there is any known adverse effect on the female reproductive system. There were some references to the use of azathioprine in the treatment of transplant patients with cancer and one reference about menstrual disturbances in patients with lupus. There was one case study that reported restoration of fertility in a woman with autoimmune premature ovarian failure.

Perhaps you should call his office and ask for more information.

Thanks everyone

I'm going to have to ask the Endo what they were talking about next time we see them in a few weeks.
