Hi, I'm new. Vitamin D and Crohn's
Hi all,
My husband was diagnosed with mild Crohn's a few years ago. Because I'm so deeply into holistic medicine I asked his doctor if we could wean him off the steroids. Over a few months we did, and now he takes a very good fish oil several times a day (Mega Gold), turmeric (one of the most powerful anti-inflammatories) and vitamin D (5,000) a day (drops are ideal, but capsules are fine).
I wrote an article on D deficiency and Crohn's. A vitamin D deficiency may contribute to Crohn's and/or IBD in some. My article is titled, "Vitamin D Deficiency May Contribue to Crohn’s Disease." in case you want to read it.
My husband's symptoms are pretty well managed depending on what he eats/drinks, although he still takes Xifaxen (sp?) (he now gets it from a Canadian Pharmacy, generic, MUCH, MUCH cheaper, he thinks it works "almost" as well). His gastro wanted him to take it a few times a day but now he only takes a few times a WEEK.
His gastro wrote a paper on Crohns, believes the cause to be a particular bacteria from red meat that some people are prone to reacting to with an autoimmune response. If you want to look him up it's Dr. Ira Shafran, pretty well known in the Crohn's world. He's now apparently using some kind of worm to treat (husband refuses to do that one though he did agree to the camera pill since was part of Shafran's clinical trials).
"Novel treatment offers hope to those with immune diseases, such as Crohn's"
Hope some of this info helps,
Laura
