I was not in ICU, however I was in what was referred to as a "Step Down" unit. I have severe obstructive sleep apnoea. As such they had issues bringing me out of sedation and raising my O2 levels. I was there for maybe a day or so.
Here you don't go to ICU following routine, uncomplicated surgery, you go to recovery.
My daughter was in ICU for 24hrs but that was following emergency surgery. My son, following planned surgery, was in recovery for two hours before being brought up to the ward. Two hours is a fairly standard time when there are no complications.
I didn't go into ICU at all!! I was in recovery for about 4 hours but only because the ward wouldn't come and get me for some reason. I remember getting pretty impatient!
After emergency surgery I was in ICU for 3-4 days. I guess I was pretty bad off and also needed blood and platelets.
But, I think that is the exception and not the rule, hence I am exceptional
