Hey everyone.

I just wanted to share with you a story about a little friend I have found. About a year ago We started feeding a couple of our back yard wild grey squirrels( especially in the winter when it is so cold). Well about 4 or close to 5 months ago I noticed I would get this little guy who does not really live close to our house( I think he is in the next block) well he is a disabled squirrel. At first I noticed when he would run, he kind of tilted to one side. I mean he can move, and he can run real fast if he wants to or needs to. When I seen him I started feeding him a few nuts. I noticed when he sits up to eat he does not have great balance at all, he kind of wobbles back and fourth. I also learned that he is blind in one eye for sure. Well I kind of fell for this little guy and now he is a regular visitor to my yard, usually about every other day or so. He is my buddy. I call him dizzy( due to how un-steady he is ).

This little guy is amazing. I mean with all he has against him, he keeps going and he does not give up, EVER. I mean we get a few other squirrels that come to eat( these are our regular back yard wilds). Well sometimes squirrels can be very territorial and mean. Once about 2 months ago one of my regular back yard wilds tried to chase my Dizzy off, well Dizzy was having NO part of of that. He stood his gound and chased the other squirrel away! Well today this morning I spotted my Dizzy out back so I gathered my stash of nuts ( unsalted pecans and walnuts, and hazelnuts) and I went to feed him. Behind our house in the alley we have a huge telephone pole that the squirrels will run up if they sense danger( like a person walking their dog or something). Well today that is exactly what happened. Well Dizzy makes me so nervous when he climbs high. I mean I know he is use to it, he is a squirrel after all. But today he tested the waters( almost gave me a heart attack too!). Well he went up the pole and started climbing across on the electircal wires! Ok, so there is Dizzy about 3 stories high trying to climb across the high tension electrical wires and he is wobbling all over the place!! I thought he was going to fall, but thank God after I called to him he turned around and came back down:yfaint:

Anyhow, Dizzy has been coming to eat here for the last 4 or 5 months and I have seen this little guy over come so many adversities that his little life has given him. I mean I am not sure if his disabilities were due to a birth injury or was he dropped when he was a baby, did he get sick, fall out of a tree,I dont know. He is blind in one eye and he does not have good balance. But he manages to make up a pole and up a tree and he does ok( as long as he does not try and walk across the wires like a tight rope walker! :) He keeps going no matter what. I am a huge animal lover and this little squirrel amazes me. I mean I feel for these little guys. Look what they have to overcome, they have be out in the freezing winter weather, snow storms, freezing rain, you name it. But they do not have the option to just stay in the nest if they dont feel good or if it is cold, No they have to go find food because they have to eat. When they are sick they have to keep going, there is no room for weakness in the animal world. It is the survival of the fittest for them. They have it so hard. So if I can help them a little by giving them some nuts and water, especially the little disabled one, well that makes me feel good. Being chronically sick myself for the last 9 years with such awful debilitating health problems, well I have had quite a few times where I just want to give up. I mean I have prayed to just die I was in so much pain and so tired of being in such severe pain I just wanted it to end. Well Now when I start to feel that way, I just think of Dizzy. I think, look at that little guy, he keeps going. He has it way rougher than I do. He has no doctor to run to for help, he has to storm the weather in order to eat and drink, he has no choice. When I think of him, I think maybe I can keep going too... :)

That's a great story! We live a very rural area and get to see many kinds of animals here. Lots of skunks, ground hogs, deer, bunnies and more! As compared to humans you are right about how much harder they have it and keep on fighting!

Hope you all feel better!:ysmile:

Thanks everyone,

Yeah, These little guys are wonderful and amazing that is for sure. Glad I could share my story, thanks for reading it.

Sweet story Ihurt :)

We have some wild geese we feed, and when their bowl is empty, they walk up to our front door, to quack and bang with beaks until we come out and give them more food.

Thought I was the only one who talked to squirrels. I've been an admirer of squirrels since one 'charged' me once on a hunting trip (and, please... I gave up hunting almost 30 years ago... so no hate mail, OK?). Anyway, I was tracking this deer, and apparently I intruded on his turf (it might have been female... but the territorial attitude leaves me to believe it was a male). So 'mister' gives me a verbal what for. Which I ignored, .. I wanted that big buck sooo bad. Well, my continuing seemed to really set him off... down the tree he came on the fly.. with even more verbal abuse directed toward me. I still paid him no heed... so off the tree he comes, and makes a beeline for me. There I am, 6' 3", I am carrying a Remington semi auto... 24" barrel, 30 -06, 6 shot clip... loaded for bear. Seriously. The only 30 calibre more powerful is the 300 magnum. 220 gr slug from my rifle would drop a full grown bull moose in his tracks... and I was a damn fine shot. Didn't phase Mr Squirrel one bit... he literally came within 3 feet of me, on the ground... and stood his ground and gave me what for. The sound of him running through the dry, dead leaves on the ground, his stance, his vocalizations.. all together it was quite impressive. So, I backed off. He continued telling me off as he watched me slowly reversing away from his tree... until I crossed whatever magic threshold he'd in mind as marking his turf... then he turned around, scampered up the tree, and slowly quieted down as I moved away. Absolutely fearless. Or crazy. I figure he'd never seen a person before.. or a rifle.. and my size didn't deter him. So I left, and left him, in peace.

Since then, I've had a special place in my heart for squirrels. The ones I've met since in the city are far more timid. But, I feed them every winter, and marvel at their survival.

So, kudos to you... and best wishes to Dizzy.

Ya Noy: That is so funny with the geese knocking at your door! We have one of our back yard squirrels jump up on our window sill of our kitchen window and he will scratch at the window when he is hungry! That is cute about the Geese though!!

Kev: I love your story!! It made me smile! Yep, I have noticed that some of the squirrels can be very brave! I mean I am suprised too, I live in the City and I have had squirrels come right up to me. I had one last year, I was walking in the park by my house and he literally came right up to me, tapped his little paw on my shoe begging for something to eat!! He was sooo cute. But that is funny that the squirrel you saw actually got down from the tree and was scolding you for being near his or her tree! Lol :) I wonder if it was a mama who had babies in the nest?? I know that the mama squirrels can get Very upset if there is a person or even another animal near her babies. I know last summer some guy parked his jeep infront of our house and I guess he left on vacation for a weekend. Well his stupid car alarm got tripped and kept going off every 20 minutes. Well there was a mama squirrel in the tree right above where this jeep was parked. I watched as the mama squirrel came huffing down the tree just a screeching like crazy, she was mad. Well, she went over and was looking all aroung the jeep and trying to figure out what that sound was! Thankfully we and a bunch of other neighbors called the police and they disabled the alarm system on the car! Thank God otherwise we would have been up all night with that thing going off! But yeah, I just wonder if you ran into a new mama squirrel that day..... Thanks for sharing your story, it made me smile!!! :)
