He doesn't recommend DS have any orthodontic work due to probable infection or worsening of mouth ulcers .
He stated if the mouth ulcers calmed down to non existent and if he came off immunosuppressant ( insert hysterical mom laugh at dentist ) then he would consider metal work .
For now orthodontics is on hold unless DS does Invisalign ( płastic stuff).

Unless of course the Gi has different info ...
:(

Fwiw M had braces while on Humira (and for a while Humira + mtx). Orthodontist and rheumatologist had no problem with that but she didn't have mouth ulcers.

I think because DS had cellulitis plus multiple cases of strep - they are a little more cautious .
He is only 10 so we have time .

MLP, it was the same with C. He had severe mouth ulcer before dx and up until remi after dx. Dentist didn't want him to have them until he was stable. Now that the mouth ulcers aren't an issue C is refusing metal at 17. We are considering invisalign.

That makes sense MLP. You do have plenty of time, hope they'll clear up (or maybe we'll have better drugs!).

Hope it's not the case, but if he needs an expander due to having a small mouth, now is the time before the jawbone fuses permanently. Usually around age 12.

We totally lucked out in that our orthodontist also has an MD. I've learned a ton from her - and she's gotten a crash course in gastro from us!

Funny, I was JUST wondering about this, about to make an orthodontist appointment to assess when to start braces. :)

Hopefully the mouth ulcers will settle. My son has braces and has no issues so far. I can understand why they would be reluctant while there are ulcers. I have braces and regularly get irritation/little areas of lumps caused by the braces rubbing. Don't think I could cope if I had any other mouth issues.

DS has been prone to infection since on biologics so I think that is the main concern.
Still need to talk to the GI to get their opinion and ortho since they have more exp.
But judges from my oldest mouth sores from a palette expander -- we will see.

What about a retainer? It's been a while since my girls had them but I don't think they got mouth sores with them, they're pretty benign if I remember correctly.
