Yesterday was infusion day for DS and DD. DS labs look great except for slightly low albumin so we'll increase calorie/protein intake. DD hemoglobin dropped from 11.4 to 9.1 so GI wants her to take Ferrous Sulfate 325mg twice daily. That seems like a lot. I have a message in to her but wondering if I should be concerned about this drop. Her white blood cells also dropped (though still normal range) from 5.7 to 4.4. Her sed rate is great but I of course freaked myself reading that anemia can be due to inflammation!! HELP!!!

Anemia is common in Ibd kids
Not necessarily inflammation
Check to see how much of the dose is actually elemental iron
Ds was on the equivalent of 50 mg of elemental iron
But we chose chelated biferrious glycenate since that is easier on the gut
Good luck

MLP is right - it's the elemental iron amount that you need to look at. My daughter is on about 650mg of ferrous guconate (two tabs a day). I think the recommended dose of elemental iron is something like 100-200 (you should double check that ;-) and ferrous gluconate tab has like 37mg of elemental iron.

One thought - if your daughter was menstruating at the time, it could drop her iron levels.

Thanks for the suggestions. I still haven't heard from GI yet. DD hasn't gotten her first period yet but I was wondering if maybe she's going to start and that could have made it drop? Probably not, I'm guessing it's just DURING menstruation that iron drops.

We used a liquid iron supplement which never irritated my son's stomach. Think it was called Sytron
