Hello all! My son (13yrs) has crohn's disease and is ready to have braces put on....are there any concerns that we should be aware of....or any questions we need to ask the orthodontist that may interact with/or interfere with his health? He is currently doing well...mouth is healed and is growing and eating with no problems....we do have concerns that this could "ignite" a flare....especially since one option given was to extract 4 teeth prior to the braces....any advice or comments are welcome!

Thank you
Farran7 (son dx 2010...currently 13yrs old)

Apriso (2010-2014)
Sulphasalizine (4 per day currently)
Folic acid
Caltrate D
multivitamin
nutritional supplements as needed

Not in particular but our teeth are vulnerable since many with IBD do suffer bone loss. It's worth mentioning to the orthodontics to ensure he properly cleans and maybe a mouthwash designed for things like braces and dentures when harder to care for the teeth/gums.

Hi, I'm 13 years old with Crohn's disease. I got braces about half a year ago, and it didn't cause any particular IBD-related problems. I presume that for people with weak bones it might cause problems, but for me, it wasn't an issue.
Hope this helped, and I hope your son gets better!

I am prone to severe gum inflammation from my Crohns. My dentist recommended Invisalign for me because I can take them out if my gums swell or become inflamed. I've had them for 6 weeks and I think it was a good choice vs. traditional braces (I'm in my 30's and also didn't want traditional braces for reasons of vanity).

My daughter got her braces a week after she got diagnosed and had no problems apart from a few ulcers at the beginning.

Good luck
