I've just registered to this forum even though I have often peeked in for information. I've just switched from dilaudid to demerol for stricture pain/obstructions. I was getting terrible itching from the dilaudid - and not the best pain relief. Demerol dosage is 50mg/day as necessary. Is that a joke? So far,150 mg will help but I need to take it every 3 hours - this is wayyyy beyond the suggested posology...and I am having some itching. Should I ask for something else?

Hi Chow girl. Welcome to the forum. That is a lot of pain medication. I found demerol very good but extremely addictive. Is there a plan to treat the problem long term (surgically)? I wouldnt want to be on dilaudid or Demerol for very long. Is a patch an option? Hope this gets sorted out soon.

I was responding from iphone but had to take a call and now i can t find my reply...? So sorry if my response went through already.
I have strictures in ileum. Dr and i agree to no surgery until i can no longer manage at home and find myself in emerg too often. Surgery would increase severity of short gut synd ( prev surg) and worsen peri-a disease.
Patches of what? Fentynal ( sp)?

Hi. I hear you on the short gut issues. I'm at the point the doctor doesn't want to operate anymore. I was wondering if Demerol is available in a patch - but I'm not sure if that would be better than pills.

At least I'm rid of the itchiness from the dilaudid - i still can't have bare arms in public until they are healed however so I am keen on the weather cooling down. Thanks for your input. I will discuss it with my gastro. Stay well.

Hi chowgirl,
I would recommend checking into fentanyl patches for the pain control. Demerol is a medication that really is not used much in the States anymore due to the side effects and the addictive nature of the medication. There are other options usually that can control pain. Some of the other options (oxycodone and oxycontin) can also be pretty addictive as well. I hope you are able to find an alternative to help you through this tough time.
