Anyone told to take bowel prep twice weekly (or even just weekly!) to prevent constipation?

Hi

Having been in hosptial a lot lately with an impacted bowel and severe constipation, my gastro has advised me that because it seems movicol (8+ sachets a day), senna, lactulose etc have no effect whatsoever on giving me successful bowel motions, that I am to take PICOPREP twice each week, along with a oral fleet enema to help 'move things along'

I am quite worried with this, as I am only 90lbs and small for my age, not to mention having significant digestive issues this regime will not be sustainable long term.

Has anyone else been advised to use a bowel prep as a weekly medication to prevent constipations???Love any advice or feedback, or anything that might work as an alternative.

BTW in Australia, so I am not sure what microlax is :)

Movicol is the same thing as miralax just different name in different countries
Do you have Ibd ?
If so what meds are you on for that?
Sometimes when Ibd isn't controlled it can cause severe constipation

Ah okay. There are so many different brand names for the same generic medications that it gets so confusing sometimes!

No I don't have IBD as of yet - am waiting list (three months) for another colonoscopy as last time they were specifically looking for what was causing all of my upper GIT issues (ie the coeliac diagnosis + EE)

I only take motillium for the gastroparesis, along with various medications for GERD. The EE is treated with an inhaler with steroids when I have flares.

Just thought it might be usual to have bowel prep taken as a regular medication sometimes in the case of severe constipation!

Sometimes people with Gastroparesis can have severe constipation (dysmotility through their entire gut). My daughter is on Domperidone too (same as Motileum) but her constipation is not as bad.

Have you seen a motility specialist? I have heard of other people with the same issue using very strong laxatives or bowel preps frequently.
