GI just prescribed 50mg of Azathioprine to my 16yr old son. He was just diagnosed last month w/ Crohn's and has been on a temporary dosage of Prednisone to get him feeling better. I know he can't stay on the Prednisone for too long but the Azathioprine looks like a pretty scary drug to me.....I'm very nervous about him being on it! Has anyone had experiance w/ this drug?

I'm so glad to have this form.....this is such unchartered territory for me.

I was on Aza for a little while and it was really good, I got some joint pains from it so was taken of it , but my crohns was really good whilst on it. I had regular blood tests (every 2 weeks - then monthly) so they monitor you really well whilst your on it. i got a couple of colds whilst on it and it didn't affect me any worse than they would normally.
Hope this helps , try not too worry ( i know it's easier to say than do lol) :)

Both of my children are on Azathioprine. I don't like the thought of them being on it but for me it is the lesser of two evils. My daughter has been on it for 5 years with no issues and my son has been on it for 8 months with no issues either.

If you look in this forum, treatment, you will see there is an Imuran Club sub forum, this is the brand name for Azathioprine. Have a browse through there as I think you will find many of the questions you have answered.

You are so not alone with your fears and concerns hun...

Thank you so much Dusty & Joleen! I didn't realize that it was Imuran! So now I realize that I actually took it for a couple of years myself for LC but it didn't work too well for the LC. But it's so much scarier to think of your kids on these meds than yourself. I know we'll have to watch for colds, ect.. since he has a history of pnemonia (sp?) and upper respritory is a weak spot for him.

Dusty, good to hear of the results you kids have had. I'll check out the other forum too. Thank you!
