Hi Everyone
I am very new here but so grateful to have found this group. I wanted to share what I have went through this past week for a few reasons...I wonder if I am the only one to experience this or if I did something wrong....
I was just diagnosed Feb 28 with moderate Crohn's and a fistula. The treatment was to begin Imuran. One tablet for three days, then two tablets for three days, then three tablets as the ongoing dose. I was scheduled for blood work each week. I began my first dose on that day, the dosing of one pill for those three days were fine. I felt nothing. The day after my first increase to two pills I felt nauseated and tired...checked , this was normal...kept going. The day after my second dose of two pills I felt awful. I felt like I had a fever (but I didn't), muscle aches and pains and a horrible head ach. The third day I just felt sicker than sick. I called the dr and left a message (worried about increasing to 3 pills), they called me back and told me to get blood work and stop the medication. This was now Wed evening, I was instructed to call Friday for results and instructions. Thursday I could barley move my neck, my head was throbbing so bad I thought maybe in the small window of time that I taken this med I had caught a horrible flu and visited my family dr. This doc felt it was a reaction and prescribed Tylenol 3 and Robaxacept for pain and told me to follow up with GI in the morning as planned. I tried but through the night things got worse, I developed a rash and a spasm in my lower spine. I was experiencing the worst head ache of my life and felt like I was going to die. By 7am my hubby took me to the hospital. I was shaking, my blood pressure was low and in agony. The GI was called and I had ultrasounds, blood work, X-rays and even a lumbar puncture and there was nothing found to reason my rash, pain, shaking, head ache. In the end the hospital pumped me full of narcotics for three days until the pain subsided. Its been a couple days now and the pain in my back is just minimal, head ache is gone and rash is clearing...now dealing with all the yuckys of getting all the narcotics out of my system. I still have not seen my GI until Sat and I am nervous as heck! What was this? Was this an allergic reaction? Has anyone one else been through this ? What if he says I need to try this again ? What If new meds do this? I am supposed to be starting Humira at some point....I am in panic mode! I never want to feel like that again! I feel like a freak with a reaction like this! Help!

Hey sorry I can't offer any advice, did they do a TMPT test to check that you could metabolize the drug? I wish I could offer some advice but just take it easy, I hope you feel better real soon

Hi Jaicye,

You are not alone, I had a very similar reaction to the Imuran. Severe nausea, vomiting, high fevers, pain, chills, extreme tiredness...absolutely terrible! I ended up in the hospital for a few days because of it. I was on it for 12 days before they finally figured out it was the medications doing it to me.

Before starting it my blood work did come back saying that I could metabolize it just fine so the dr. did not taper me up he hit me full dose right out of the gate.

Editing to respond to another of your questions: I would not imagine after a reaction like that your doctor would put you on that again. The next line of defense they often do is methotrexate injections, then Humira, however my dr. jumped to Humira. I did not react the same way with Humira, it was an amazing drug and worked to get me into remission, however, it did end up giving me a lupus like reaction, but that took some time to develop, not like the Imuran.

I'm scared, just like you, about the meds and the side effects. It is a very scary thing, but I have to keep reminding myself that letting the Crohn's run rampant without treatment would be bad, too.

Hang in there, keep moving forward and do your research. Everyone is terrific on these boards and there is a lot of knowledge here. I lurk more than I type, but wanted to reassure to that you are not alone. :)

Yeah, had a very similar reaction. My rash took almost a year to fade away completely. The pain went within 48 hours of ceasing the drug. So, you aren't the freak, the drug is.

Thanks very much for your support, that makes me feel much better to know others have seen similar side effects (not that I would want anyone to go through this!) but to know your not alone really helps!

While I never had that kind of reaction with Imuran, I respect and appreciate those that have. Obviously, it is wise that you discontinued the Imuran. I know it can be hard, but try to stay positive about trying another Crohn's medication. Crohn's is painful and it can get worse if left untreated. My advice is to keep talking to your doctor about your questions and fears and also to read up on the different meds on this forum. We are here to try to support each other with this.

Hi guys,

I was actually looking for something different and stumbled upon this forum and had to say I had a very similar thing happen to me in 2010 when I was first put on imuran. I was taking 2 pills a day for about 3 weeks, and it was the heat of summer here in Australia, so i didn't really notice that my temperature was up so badly... anyway i ended up getting sent from work I had what felt like a migraine and was dizzy etc... went out to dinner and fainted! and had severe nausea... was in hospital for 3 days... couldn't figure out what was causing the fever and then sent home... then i kept getting temp spikes for like 39-40 and fainting (lost my vision and hearing at one point was scary) and then spent the next 10 days in hosp... they finally figured out the imuran had suppressed my imune system too low (EVEN though it was a regular to light dosage) and i picked up a virus called Cytomegalovirus... it's one of those ones that most people get in their lives and won't even know.. but because I was immunosuppressed it caused a similar thing to glandular fever... and then when i was finally aloud to leave the hospital I was so run down and weak for about 2 months... it was awful... I had a bowel resection last year and now they've made me start back on imuran.... only one pill a day because for some reason my body doens't like it as can be seen by the story... and it does nothing... im still really sick!

Shame that isn't good :( Is there anything else you can go on? Maybe you would tolerate 6MP better? You should get in contact with your GI ASAP and let them know it's not working for you if you havent already. Hope you feel better soon
