Our 19 year old daughter is newly diagnosed with Crohn's. She is taking Liada and just finished up a 14 day course of prednisone-coming off it gradually. Yesterday and so far today she has had really bloody stools. She is also experiencing dizziness and vomiting. She is already anemic and don't know if these symptoms are related to the anemia or going off the prednisone. We're concerned with how much blood can she pass before we should seek medical action. Anyone have advice we would appreciate it.

Welcome psugirl; So sorry to hear of your daughter's suffering. My 8 yr old son was dx'd in Mar., and did 5 mths of prednisone, including a very slow taper. He never had bloody stools, except due to constipation. Prednisone did not make him dizzy, but he was anemic when he was dx'd, and he was certainly dizzy then. If I were you, I would seek medical attention, especially if this is a new, or worsening symptom. Take care.

Not normal. I would call. I'm guessing she weaned off the pred too quickly and is still flaring. My son has never been on pred for less than 5-6 weeks, including the weaning process.

Also, just my two cents, but I believe Lialda is a 5-ASA med? There seem to be very few people with Crohn's who 5-ASA meds work well for. Generally, they're not strong enough.

Poor thing. I'd give the GI nurse a call and see what she says. I'm guessing she'll be put back on pred again.

If in doubt I would always go for some medical advice. Better safe than sorry. Hope she feels better soon

Thank you all for your replies and advice. We are at the hospital now. I agree better safe than sorry! This is a tough disease. Thanks again and I'm glad I found this forum!

Welcome Psugirl

I'm glad you've taken her to the hospital. Hope everything's ok...:ghug:

Welcome psugirl!

Sorry your daughter is feeling so poorly. A 14 day course of prednisone seems short to me. She might just need to be on the Prednisone a bit longer before tapering. Did her symptoms get better when she was on the full dose of Prednisone?

Hope she is feeling better and you are getting some answers.

((((Hugs)))))

She's been admitted. They are giving her Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole. They want to monitor her for a couple of days. She's on a clear liquid diet to give her colon a break. They want a stool sample but unless she eats she probably won't have one. We'll see what happens. She is feeling better though. Thanks again for all your concern. It's really nice to know we're not alone.

Poor pumpkin! Poor mama! But really glsd she is being looked after. Don't discount a bm on a liquid diet...when my daughter was inpatient she was on TPN and still passing plenty. Keep us posted.
