According to the Crohn’s and Colitis foundation, as many as 30% to 60% of people with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, have lower-than-average bone density. Causes of Bone Loss in inflammatory bowel disease include the use of corticosteroid therapy, inflammation in active disease and Vitamin D deficiency. In attempt to minimize bone loss, certain general principles should be followed:
• Avoid smoking and excess alcohol
• Do weight-bearing exercises, such as resistance exercise, to prevent both bone loss and muscle atrophy
• Daily calcium (1500mg) and Vitamin D (800 IU) supplements
• Take measures to prevent falls
