Hi all,

So about 1 1/2 weeks ago, my GI called me after a visit and had stool and blood work done, and he tells me I tested positive for C Diff.

He puts me on Flagyl for 2 weeks. He actually said that this was good news, because it could explain why the Predinsone he has me on isn't as effective as he would expect, so this should effectively treat the C Diff, and diarreah should go away, then we might not have to talk about 6MP when I see him in September.

I'm guessing it may have been caused from the Bactrim I was put on after I went to the hospital shortly after starting a round of Prednisone again in early July (prescribed by GI for Crohn's), and the ER thought I had a UTI/bladder/kidney infection.

Then a few days later after starting Flagyl, extreme frequent urination, and growing discomfort to pain in pelvic area and uretha...UTI again? And diarrhea getting worse, not better. I called my GI, and he said it the Flaygl doesn't explain the other symptoms I'm complaining about.

I went to Urologist and he said I have prostratitis (prostate infection) and put me on Cipro. He was aware that I have C Diff, so he said we're going to have be careful, it's a balancing act.

I stop the Cipro tomorrow (although I'll have a few days left of pills, and the Urologist said if I feel the symptoms return, I can use them...wtf?), and the Flagyl I take for another 2-3 days after I stop the Cipro.

Right now, my Crohn's symptoms, seem somewhat normal on the Prednisone...that is, the predinsone (I'm tapered down to 40mg/day currently) helps me get through most of the day until about 10pm. Then around 10, I have 1 BM before bed -- semi-formed, but disintegrates in water, then I wake up usually around 1-3am, have another another BM, looser, like sand or sediment, then another a couple hours later, same as before, or more diarrhea, then finally wake up in the morning and do the same thing again, very loose or diarrhea, then I'm good again until 10pm usually...just a lot of gurgling going on in my gut throughout the day.

I'm supposed to be driving to Florida this week w/ my daughters (1,000 miles one-way!) for vacation, and am concerned about the C Diff....how do I know if what I'm seeing in my BMs are just my normal Crohn's nonsense or if it's the C Diff? How fast does C Diff take to become dangerous? My doctors don't seem to be concerned, but my GI and Urologist both said I should be fine to go on the trip. But my GI was on vacation last week and doesn't know yet about my Urologist giving me the Cipro (I plan on calling him if he's back tomorrow and letting him know), but I suspect he thought that might happen if I was diagnosed w/ infection.

Sorry for the long spiel....anybody have experience w/ C Diff???

HI there, I have never had C diff, but some have. But I have tons of experience on Flagyl and Cipro and course the dreaded Pred. The antibiotics get rid of the source , pred masks everything til you get down on a lower dose. I know been there too many times.

I have read for travellers Diahreah and if you are in the states Xanifax helps, there is a thread on it , cant copy and paste it dunno why...look under search on here. Just a thought.

Hope you have a great trip, and the only suggestion is dont drink water unless it is bottled for your own protection.

my grandad got hit with cdif it almost killed him real high fever, throwing up, runs, he was in hospital with it for weeks they taught he was going to have to have surgery to cut out the dead bowel from the cdif.

I have had C-Diff, it was not pleasant. I had to take 10 days of Flagyl I think. I've read sometimes the first round is not enough and some people end up having to do a second round. If you are finishing up your meds and concerned maybe you could ask your Dr to test your stool again to make sure its cleared up.

Oh sooo sorry! I've had C. dif twice and bladder/UTI on and off for while now. Once I had both UTI and c. dif and they gave me Vancomycin to take out both of them. It's a really potent antibiotic but works fast.

Wow I think my husband could have written your story! He had a kidney stone which they went after and removed and then they put a stent in. Two weeks after stent removal he had lower back pain. Urologist thought it was a kidney infection. Prescribed him cipro. Two days after staring that he feels worse. More tests, including testing his stool. He is positive for C-Diff. He is on Flagyl right now. Has about a week of it left. In my research I have found that once you get C-Diff, the likelihood you will get it again it pretty high. Also, while you have it, you are contagious. Take care to disinfect things well and not be around anyone else with a weakened immune system. Vancomyacin is usually the next step of the Flagyl doesn't work. Also, my husband's doc said if he gets it again, he will go straight to vanco each time.

Good luck figuring things out and I hope you can enjoy your vacation!!:hang:
