Caffeine?

Hi,

I have had Crohns for about 20 years, small bowel, with some narrowing. I am currently on Humira and it seems to be working pretty good.

Lately I am noticing some small smears of blood after a bowel movement. I have been keeping track of it and I think it's linked to too much caffeine, leading to large messy bowel movements.

Does anyone else have issues with caffeine? Maybe I should avoid it?
I have a colonoscopy this week, just routine test, coincidence that this has happened around the same time.

I haven't heard of caffeine causing bleeding. I personally avoid caffeine because it triggers my migraines. I haven't had caffeine in several years now, but I've had blood in my stools off and on for close to a year - so for me, absolutely no connection between bleeding and caffeine.

Is it bright red blood? If so, it could be something relatively minor like an internal hemorrhoid or fissure. Having large bowel movements could certainly cause a bit of bleeding from a hemmie or fissure, I've experienced similar myself. Have you noticed any other patterns besides caffeine?

I'm glad to hear you're having a colonoscopy soon, and I hope that can figure out the source of the bleeding so that you can treat it and feel better! Keep us posted on what the scope finds. Good luck!

Sorry, I didn't mean caffeine causes bleeding, but that the caffeine is causing explosive bowel movements that are causing bleeding.

Lam,
I have discovered a way to brew your coffee that removes nearly all the acid. Go to todycafe.com to find out more. I have been using there system for years and it is cheap. Friends have started using it also and love it.

Thanks Whit! I will do that.

I have just noticed that the small amount of blood is almost always only happening when I have BM in the morning and the mornings that I have 2 or more cups of coffee with caffeine. I had two cups today and I have had about 5 bowel movements, usually I'm 1-2 BM's per day max.

I eat according to my blood type and it has been very helpful in keeping crohn's at bay
