Calcium deposit?

A few weeks ago Devynn showed me a teeny tiny little bump she had on her wrist bone. It felt like a tiny little hard pebble, but just barely big enough to feel. It's grown quite a bit, still small though. I called the ped because I don't think it has anything to do with IBD and her GI is so hard to get in to see. The secretary told me not to worry it sounds like a calcium deposit. Has anyone else had this happen? We are going in Tues morning and then she leaves Thurs or sleep away camp for a week.

Does it hurt at all? And, did she break her wrist a while back (or am I thinking of someone else)? :)

My daughter had quite a bit of pain in one of her fingers a while back, it swelled, couldn't move it, etc. We had x-rays done and some other tests (one blood test had shown something and with Stephen's crohns, they wanted to rule out RA...) but, in the end, it was some sort of calcium deposit (forget exactly what it was called). They said it likely was caused by an injury - recent or past.

If she hasn't injured it lately, I would wonder why it's growing now?? But, with my daughter, they did say that even with a past injury, it could bother her at other times.

Sorry, just read back my post... OMG, did NOT mean to ask if YOU broke her wrist! Will edit!

Glad you got her in to see her ped on Tuesday... always worth checking out. :ghug:

LMAO I didn't even see that!!
Yeah I would rather get it checked out, then I don't sit here worrying ;)

Also ganglion cysts are pretty popular in the wrist area especially after trauma to the joint. They are harmless but sometimes when they grow can get quite painful when touched or pressed. General surgeons can take them out. Doc can tell you if that is what it looks like.

Not to scare you and just a warning: I had what they (GP and Surgeon) thought was a ganglion cyst (on my ankle) for many years. If finally got so painful I caved and had the surgery. Turned out it had wrapped itself around the tendons etc. My quick 30 minute surgery turned into hours and the biopsy came back as a tumor. Later another lump appeared on my foot, Surgeon was scared it was another tumor and took it out. That surgery did a bit of damage. Come to find out it wasn't a tumor at all. Just a very benign thing. Found this out after I went to the foot doc to fix the damage the surgeon did. The foot doc said when dealing with these lumps and bumps around joints etc best to see an orthopedic or foot doc etc as there are imaging tests they can do to help determine cyst/tumor etc.

It likely is a ganglion cyst, but an expert would need to confirm.

These are usually harmless. I have had them on the wrist a couple of times. They often go away on their own. Hard to say when, my last one lasted over a year and disappeared.

The home cure for it is to strike it hard, with a book or something like that and it is supposed to make it go away. I never tried it, and would not recommend trying it, but many people told me that is how to get rid of them.

Have the doctor look at it next chance you get. These are not uncommon.

We went to the ped today and she ordered xrays. We have to go back tomorrow because we missed the xray clinic. She said it could be a cyst, but it feels sharp so she wants to check for spurs or something else with the bone. She said she's not worried, she just wants to be sure. She said as soon as they get the results of the xrays, they will call me.
