Can Ampicillin reduce intestinal inflammation

I have been suffering since September 2010 with diarrhea, (whether it is loose or soft), fructose intolerance, malabsorbtion, intolerances to various foods (chocolate, nightshade vegetables, butter, lactose, grains, gluten, etc.). I finally scheduled a colonoscopy/endoscopy for next week. But, having just gotten over a cold, I developed a sinus infection.

I went to see my doctor who prescribed a low dose ampicillin to take for two weeks. He said to stop the pills the day before the procedures so it would not interfere with the prep and to continue after the procedures. Now here is the weird thing....

Not only has the ampicillin been cleaaring up my sinus infection - but it seems to have so far stopped the diarrhea as well at least for two days anyway and I have been hungry as a horse and have eaten more than usual and have not felt bad afterward. In addition to the antibiotic, I have been taking a probiotic to offset it killing off the good flora.

Could ampicillin be clearing up the inflammation or is this just a fluke?

I for one would not take any chances and would go through with the test.

Like somebody once said... it's the only way to be sure!

If you have cd what you have is only temporary. get yourself check to be on the safe side.

As part of the penicillin family, ampicillin is used for bacterial infections, so it's possible you might have had an infection, but keep your appt for the scope, just in case.

Here's some useless geeky information!
Ampicillin and Augmentin was introduced to the British public by Beecham who's first factory was here in St Helens!
He went on to produce Brylcreem, Lucozade, Tums, 7 UP, Aquafresh as well as Beecham's Powders for colds etc, and so much more!
Long gone now, it's called GlaxoSmithKline.
But we've kept the famous Beecham's Clock Tower.
There ya go, bit of History for you

Thanks for the history - love it! Yes, I am keeping the appointments but thought what a coincidence that one medication seems to be clearing up two problems!

you may likely just have a bacteria infection throughout your sinuss and intestines..they are the same mucus membrane i think, and you may just have pseudomembrane colitits, not colitis or crohns really at all. when i had c.diff i thought and was praying it was just the bacteria causing all this stuff and it cleared up fast with vanco and pred and i was back to normal. thought i didnt have crohns at all, but i recently had another flare and my hope is hurt becuase no infection this time, just straight up crohns :( im still praying its some crazy occurrence and my doctor is wrong

When I was first diagnosed, antibiotics were prescribed along with Entocort (and later prednizone). I also found after a few days my appetite came back, but I was REALLY hungry on prednizone.
