Hi everyone, I'm really hoping someone can help. I've recently had a colonoscopy to try and establish where my tummy troubles are coming from. The doc said they saw no inflammation in my bowel but I did have some tiny polyps which were removed. When I went back for the result it was a different doctor who saw me and said the good news was that the polyps were benign but when they were examined under a microscope they contained inflammation inside of them, as he said this to me he looked down at the results and said but it doesn't say here what type of inflammation it was. Now I was left a little stumped at that...should it have said? And if so why didn't it? He has said he needs to refer me to the Gastroentoerology clinic for further investigation and said he hasn't got enough to go on to diagnose IBD but he knows they will want to repeat the procedure at the new clinic so I need to prepare myself for further investigations to be carried out.

I'm just wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone? Or if its sounds as strange to you as it does to me? Its left me feeling really confused as to what this inflammation could be and even if it matters? Oh and I'm also wondering who the hell they were if they need to refer me for it to be investigated...super confused, sorry!!

Thanks in advance K x :confused2:

:welcome: KAT82...I cant't share the polyps part of your results but maybe you have to wait for the original Doc? I don't know how things work in the UK, but others here do.

I would think since they did find inflammation they would investigate more and send you to a Gi, that doesn't make sense. Maybe some docs think the results are not required to send you to a Gi, sometimes it is called cover your butt, pardon the pun.

I wouldnt just sit on that explanation, I would be back and asking alot more questions. :hang: keep us posted ok.

Thanks for replying Pen, I hate being confused :eek:/ I just wonder why there would be inflammation inside the polyps but not visible in my bowel. I'm also seeing a rheumatologist as I'm having problems with joints and muscles and my liver is slightly upset (this is the term the doctors used) so had a liver scan yesterday and hopefully get results next week.x

Hi Kat,

First off, welcome to the forum :)

Well... the type of inflammation would certainly be useful and I would bring this up with your GI. Here is the pathology of colorectal polyps and here is a little info on inflammatory polyps. I don't see any mention of microscopic colitis type pathology in there but admittedly I don't know if that type of inflammation occurs in polyps.

Did they take biopsies in addition to the removal of the polyps?

Hi David, thanks for the information its really helpful and I feel a bit more informed now. As far as I am aware I thought that they were supposed to take further biopsy's but I don't think they did. Admittedly I didn't know if they would do this if they did not see actual inflammation in my bowel and maybe that's why they didn't do it. Oh well I suppose I just have to accept its going to drag on a bit longer.

Thanks again
K x

Thanks, well that clears up even more then. I just don't think they did what they were supposed to as it doesn't make sense that they can say that their was inflammation in the polyps but not what kind. I have been told I'm now to await a referral to gastroenterology and that they procedure will have to be repeated (
