Can the intestines erupt?

Sorry if this sounds foolish but I know that with appendicitis the appendix can get so inflammed and burst. Is that possible from any aspect of crohn's? Sometimes I feel so irritated, and swollen in the lower right I am nervous it will just burst and I'll end up in the hospital. It's probably not possible, but I don't know what to think.

It's something I worry about too! I've said to my doctor before that I just feel like something will go pop down there one day.

I believe the bowel can perforate unexpectedly with Crohn's but it more happens after a blockage is left untreated or if the bowel wall thins, then ruptures. You'd probably realise you had a blockage or thinning way before anything began to perforate.

I'd really just look out for any warning signs that something is wrong, keep seeing your GI and know where your disease is at. :)

I would think if the intestine is blocked that a fistula would form before it burst that's what happened to me anyway. I was blocked then a fistula formed and it didn't come all the way to the surface so where the fistula stopped, I formed a abscess that did pop. was very nasty and required surgery. Then before they could repair the intestine the fistula came through where they repaired the abscess so when they did the surgery that had more work to do. But as far as intestines going pop. I have learned with Crohns anything is possible.

when my large intestine was removed, it was really near the point of splitting open:( but thats (to the best of my knowledge) only when you get really sick, in which case you'll know about it long before it happens and be able to get the right treatment first.

Intestines can't erupt like an explosion but they can get a tear in them and open up. I've had to dissect intestines before and they are much thinner then you would think. They won't get a tear though unless you have a bad blockage and hopefully you go to the ER or doctor before that. Don't worry about a grenade like affect going on in your intestines as that won't ever happen.

I was always worried about having a perforation as well. I was discussing this with my doctor and his comment was that I was young and healthy enough to survive it.( I think he was trying to make me feel better) I nearly perforated before my surgery in 2008. I was having extreme amounts of pain and vomiting. You will have a lot of signs before anything that drastic occurs. It's more like leakage versus an explosion like Jeff wrote above.

yep i agree with what's already been said.. i have been in that very scary place where i was seriously ill with an obstruction (apple peel!!), was passing out, vomiting between passing out, and in excrutiating pain... my bowel was swelling and swelling - was getting xrayed every hour to keep an eye on it because there is a point at which they would have to intervene if it didn't stop swelling. thankfully, just as they were preparing me for surgery and calling in the anaesthetist, the last xray showed a reduction and my stoma started working.. but yeah, i guess i was on the point of it erupting, but like has been said, you know when you're that ill - it won't just happen without you realising there is something very wrong for a while beforehand.

I've just passed through this experience (similar to Angee). I have a fistula that was digging towards my skin and many abscesses formed. The one of the abscesses popped on the surface like it was going to burst, so the surgeon opened it up, drained the abscesses and put a drainage in. Now I'm walking with a hole in my abdomin and a drain out of it! I will hopefully start Remicade soon, in hopes of closing the fistula. Else surgery is the only option..

Yes, one of the Bee Gees brothers died of a ruptured intestine. But it is not a high incidence. Sometimes you can have a small leak and perintonitis can set in..not pretty.

My UC was diagnosed after a perforated bowel, Cyndy you're right it was sooo painful. I had auto immune anaemia aswell so when that flared my UC did, I was very ill. My blood count had dropped to 3.5, I had to be resuscitated and have lots of blood transfusions before I strong enough to have my operation. Not a nice time at all !!

My ileum perforated so I had to go to emergency surgery. I had to lay on my stomach to feel better. You would be having a fever and throwing up a lot. I was writhing in pain until before the surgery when they loaded me up on god knows what to sedate me lol. Worst pain ever.

Run a search for mega toxic colon and look at the images they will blow your mind. If you don't take care of you crohn or ulcerative colitis then that is what can happen. Mega toxic colon.

If you watch UFC, that is what happened to Brock Lesnar. He had a perforated colon from Diverticulitis. I can't believe he's fighting again.

My friend had Chron's and died the other week from a perforated bowel. He lived in a nursing home and had been ill for about a week. I keep thinking that I could have done something to save him
