I was finally able to see my GI this past week after getting CT scan results from a few weeks ago. I'm feeling much better (no bloating, no pain, just really good :) )...anyhoo, when Doctor pushed around in my stomach that's when I jumped.....:eek2: soooooo....he'd prefer if I stayed on the CIPRO at full dosage for another two weeks and then 250mg daily for 4 months. I'm not crazy about taking antibiotics for that long but so far, the CIPRO has been helping me battle the inflammation that seems to be causing all this pain.

Anyone had to take CIPRO for their crohns?

Hey Hip.. I haven't, but I'm sure I've read of people on here who have taken it. figure they'll be only too glad to pass on their experiences with it ASAP. If I might suggest, this would have been a great conversation to have with your Dr.. you know, short term side effects, long term consequences, that sort of thing. Anti-biotics aren't to be treated like candy, but I'm betting your doc is aware of that. Since you're already on them, you probably know first hand the potential side effects.. One thing I do know, that it's probably best in dealing with an infection to treat it over an extended period of time Vs a short course of A/B. The very real problem lies in weakening, but not killing off outright, the targeted infection. If they all don't die from the A/B, there's a risk the new generation will be resistant to the anti-biotics.. It's like, the only ones who didn't die immediately are already somewhat resistant, their offspring are likely to be much more so.. I would rather subject myself to the risks of using A/B's for an extended time Vs the risk of facing a new strain that is anti-biotic resistant. But its purely a personal assessment of the situation. I had some close calls with number of A/B resistant bugs during several of my stays in the hospital. not nice!!!

So right Kev! One of my fears is that I'll really need the Cipro one day for a super bug out there and it won't work for me! He offered the Cipro as first course treatment, and I kind of questioned him on it. He explained there would be no probs since it wasn't an infection I was battling! Not really sure what that means. He then suggested entocourt as an alternative and I wasn't crazy about that either! So he then settled on the Cipro for me. I was OK with that. I haven't yet taken them. I'm still wondering if I should go ahead as I'm feeling OK right now.

The bad thing also is if you take it for extended periods of time, it can cause oral thrush... or yeast infections for women... not too pretty if ya ask me.

I took Cipro... but not for Crohn's... for an infection.

Ciprofloxacin is one of several ab's that has an anti-inflammatory property to it too and thats why it's used for Crohn's patients outside of infection issues.

CLARITHROMYCIN is another ab as an example that has anti-inflammatory properties, which I cant have as I come out in hives..

Can see why you are concerned Hipster in relation to longer term use of Cipro but as you say it seems the lesser of the evils in relation to steroids.

I'm currently taking Cipro, Flagyl, Entocort (although I just finished a 6 week course), Prednisone and Pentasa ...

Personally I like the Cipro so far since it offers the fewest side effects.
