I have been recalled for blood tests 3 times over the last month I was last there on Thursday and on Friday morning the doctor called me to ask me to go and see him this morning. I went this morning and he said my liver was 5 times more than what it usually is and my results in the passed were always ok so whats changed and was I taking something over the counter. Sigh!!!! cod liver oil for the past 6 weeks. He shook his head, told me to bin them and back in 2 weeks for another check. I read somewhere cod liver oil was good if you have crohns, but I guess my liver thinks differently!!

What in your liver was 5 times more than usual?

Cod liver oil is high in vitamin D, vitamin D is also produced in your own liver if you are getting enough sunlight and it's functioning properly. Vitamin D is required, and many people are deficient, but too much can have toxic effects.

Im not sure where in the liver it was 5 times more than it usually is, doctor only said your bloods have been fine for a long time, but now your liver is 5 times more than they have been :-(

Hi Martha,
Vitamin A is also stored in the liver. It can be toxic at high levels.
I know accutane (prescription isotreninoin...a form of vitamin A) is toxic to the liver and bowel apparently....linked to IBD.
They are usually looking at liver enzymes in the main as nogutsnoglory has said.
The other issue with cod liver oil and fish oil is toxins and pollutants from the sea getting into the fish through ingestion or some other means. Cod liver oil might concentrate these toxins and pollutants more so....as the liver has to process these chemicals in the fish as in humans. There are implications for the human liver of one who ingests cod liver oil in particular if the oil has not gone through some special filtering processes. Some companies use special distilling techniques to ensure the safety of their products. Cheaper products may have not gone through these molecular distilling processes.
