I have posted in the past about my GI issues. I was hospitaized last week.

The CT showed wall thickening consistant with inflammatory/infectious colitis. It also showed stool burden. The fecal white blood count test was positive.

The colonoscopy report says the rectosigmoid has patchy erythema/aphthi. The path report says: "Focal active colitis, pattern of injury."

Would any of these be from IBS? The GI who did the test did not give me a clear answer. I still need to make an appointment with my regular doctor.

Thank you.

No, unfortunately these findings are more likely to be from IBD (Crohn's or ulcerative colitis) rather than IBS. IBS is a functional condition rather than an inflammatory one, so any signs of inflammation (and you have several) are unlikely to be due to IBS.

Now IBD is not the only thing that can cause inflammation of the bowel, but what this report says could be seen as consistent with IBD. However, I or anyone else on this board are certainly in no position to make a diagnosis. That should come only from close consultation with your doctor.

Good luck.

The GI doctor said I probably have IBS and maybe Crohn's. I hope I can get a clear answer before I see my regular GI doctor.

I was on antibiotics in the hospital. What else would cause results like that?

The question is whether it is an infection (but you’ve had these same test results before, right?) or an autoimmune problem. There are an awful lot of (different) interpretations that go on as they are identifying the origin of the inflammation. IBS doesn’t cause inflammation like this. The antibiotics in the hospital are to deal with the inflammation if it is infectious in nature. Hope that helps.

I've had test results like these in the past. The doctors said constipation can cause inflammation. They just say I have IBS or non-IBD colitis.

Definitely try to get a second opinion. Constipation doesn’t cause inflammation. Inflammation can cause constipation.

I spoke with someone at the GI office. She said I probably just have IBS. My issues could also be from infection or using NSAIDs. I told her I don't understand how IBS causes all that. She said she can have the doctor call me.

My primary GI did not call me back yet.
