I am 71 & diagnosed with UC 5 yrs ago. Prednisone, enemas, suppositories, Imuran, each worked for a period of time then bleeding increased. Remicade four times and diarrhea massive and could not get dr to see me, finally went to ER. Admitted and treated for 1st time with IV prednisone. Doctors asked me " where do you want to be sent to see a surgeon?" ( they had good GI surgeons there).
I feel they wanted me out of their hospital. Transferred to another medical center and admitted. Symptoms slowed and sent me home to gain some strength and increase nutrition. Severe diarrhea returned in 3 week and was admitted and had a total Colectomy and ileostomy. The 10+ inches of intestine /rectum left has now totally closed with stricture. The doctor can not do a colonoscopy now for observation of the tissue. Now the doctor wants to do a Completion Proctectomy (abdominal & rectal) I am very apprehensive!! Need to know post op time line for pain and how long before I can sit down, rectal drainage?, Everything!! Have begun to have some rectal blood/ mucus too. To help me prepare for surgery in Aug probably.
All responses to me I know will help.

Hi there and welcome. I'm so sorry you're having to go through all of this :( While I don't have any answers for you, I have copied your post here to our surgery forum in the hopes that someone else do.

My heart goes out to you.

ive just been through this op,12th feb, had the, needle in the back anaesthetic with it, makes a hell of a difference,i was uo walking 2 days later walknig in comfort, was in for about 11 days in all, and felt great, im lucky theres nothing to do ut go home and heal, but then an infection set in and i was back in hosp a week or so later, not eating etc and getting weaker with some serious drainage, this happened three times and was only homr about three weeks in all in just over three months, its absolute hell, lol, but if it wasnt for that persistant infection id be doing somersaults by now,,,,,itsgoing to be a bit painfullsitting down properlt for a while,as youd expect, but with no complications you should be out and about in a month opr so with little discomfort,im still in a fair bit of pain and slow to walk sometimes, and having to wear a pad to soak up the discharge, but the surgeon has said that it is healing nicely,,so to round up, with no big complications you should be ok, and it really is great not running back and fore to the toilet, lol
