First time on this site and hoping to find some Great advice. Was diagnosed in 2005 with crohns prescribed asacol.Did great for about a year had another flare up.Decided to check out another dr after mine said the death of my father was not stressful and did not cause my flare.Found another dr that did every test possible.Prescribed 6mp and pred!Job moved to Mexico and had to stop taking medications. Was doing great for several yrs and than bam!!!Dr puts me back on 6mp liver enzimes go up(didnt happen several yrs ago).I am feeling ok had my gullbladder removed about a month ago.I have just read so many of the post and i feel like i am not as sick as most of you guys.I am constipated 99% of the time and thought i was dying when I did have a flare! Dr says my intestines are screwed up and if i dont beleive him look at the pictures.LOL!!!So the question is he wants to start me on methotrexate in a couple of weeks.Has anyone ever tried it and how did you do?he also says that if i dont start something i will be having surgery soon.I also have a fistula between my small and large intestine! Thanks guys for listening.

Hi Carlee,
I don't have any info on the methotrexate - but there are several people here on the forum who do, and will hopefully jump in to help you. I just wanted to say it's good (with a grain of salt) to hear of someone else with constipation rather than diarrhea, because I almost never have diarrhea but I am constipated almost all of the time! It's the one symptom that keeps docs thinking that I don't have UC or Crohn's. I hope that the meds work for you and you don't have to have surgery!

Thanks Cindy I didnt know if anyone would respond or not. Im just concerned hes prescribing this to me because he knows i cant afford Remicade or Humira.Just very confused and scared!

Hi Carlee,
Im Ed from England and Im not sure Im the best person to advise you as I have just joined the site and I can only set you straight on a few points Ive learnt. Ive had crohns now for about 3 years now and my specialist has recently tried me on methotrexate. Now I dont know if you are aware of what this drug so I will quickly explain before carrying on. Methitrexate is an immunosuppressant and usually the three drugs mainly used are Azathioprine, mercaptopurine and methotrexate. The problem is that all three can give some not so nice side effects. In my case it gave me severe headaches and vision problems, anyway you may not have any side effects and be fine with it. You probably know that you wont really notice any improvement for 10 or 12 weeks as with any of the other two drugs.
On the positive side if it suits you, im told it can make life a lot better, on the downside, as an immunomodulator it will effect your immune system and make you more prone to heavy colds and such. If you go onto patientuk.com you should find it helpful, youve probably got a good site in your own area. Well i know ive gone on and im sorry oh and I may sound knowledgeable but Ive tried all three drugs on trial and had to stop all of them because of adverse side effects so I wish you all the best with your trial course.
Regards
Ed

At least for remicade look into remistart.com
It pays for a majority of the treatment. Most drug companies have some type of assistance program.
