What are the best tips for constipation? This is new to us - after 5 days of prednisone, she is bloated, gassy and can't go. Prior to this we had diarrhea 2x/day. We did bloodwork on Tuesday to make sure nothing else was going on and everything came back normal -- even anemia is almost gone.

We did Miralax last night and this afternoon, but no luck yet.

Thanks in advance.

Miralax can take up to three days to work. Keep the same dose for the days and than adjust by a tablespoon as needed.

Have you called the gi? Yes it could be the ped but you want to be cautious about a possible blockage. A GI should be notified.

I did call our GI on Tuesday which led to the blood work. If we don't have luck tonight, I will call her again tomorrow. We see her on Tuesday.

Lots of fluids -
Juices or fruits that start with p
Pears
Prunes
Etc...

Miralax can't work without plenty of water and it does take three days.

Sometimes an xray is needed to determine if the kiddo is FOS.
Then a clean out may be ordered by gi
Good luck
Did the Gi give the dose or your ped?

She won't drink juice - pushing the water. The GI prescribed the pred (5 days) to help pain from the erythema nodossum. I am pretty sure it is constipation not a blockage due to the small, pebbly-like stuff she can pass.

My son is chronically constipated, so I can sympathize. Water and fruit help him a bit, as well as restoralax (same as Miralax?). MTX has helped to loosen his bowels, but if you come up with a great solution, please share! Devynnsmom, might like that recipe, if you don't mind passing it along! Thanks!

I don't mind at all. I was given the recipe from a friend when my son was young and had chronic constipation all the time. He was on all sorts of stool softeners, and even mineral oil and this was the only thing that made him go without all the awful side effects.

2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
5 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
3 cups or 1 small box of All Bran (I have used flakes, buds and the longer bugs)
2 cups milk
1/2 cup veg oil
2 eggs
1 bag choc chips (optional, the only way my kids would eat them)

Mix all ingred together and bake at 350 for 15-20 min depending on oven.
Makes 24-30 muffins.

I would sometimes double the recipe and freeze them in freezer bags. When he needed or wanted one, we would pop it out and throw it in the microwave and they were like fresh baked.
