Hope everyone's well! Basically just wanted to know if I am able to go on a contraceptive pill with an ileostomy? Or would it not be effective cause it would leave my system too quick? Bit confused.
Things are great, I'm buying a house and planning a wedding, a baby would be a miracle just not quite yet! :)

Thanks all x

As a guy I don't know anything about birth control but anything with a shiny coating, delayed or extended release likely won't work at all or very effectively. The best formulations are liquid or chewable followed by tablets for an ostomy. I'm not sure what options are available.

Ooooo, exciting times for you, congratulations! :):):) I hope all continues to go well!

Sarah doesn't have an ileostomy but has had a healthy amount of ileum removed, 69cms. I enquired about this with Crohns and Colitis Australia some time ago and was advised that due to the reduced transit time in her gut it would always be advisable for her to use added precautions if she was to take the oral contraceptive pill.

Oral contraceptive steroids are mainly absorbed from the small bowel, and contraceptive efficacy depends on its absorptive capacity. Enhanced passage of gastrointestinal contents or impaired absorption may thus contribute to contraceptive failures in patients who have chronic inflammatory disease, diarrhea, ileostomy, or jejunoileal bypass.

Thanks for the advice, will maybe see if there's an alternative I have active crohns in my small intestine so the absorption might not be that great.

Have you looked into a rod (implant)? The type that is inserted under the skin on your arm.

I know Sarah was using this at one point. They can last up to three years but I imagine if you wish to try and conceive earlier they would remove it.

My gynecologist was not really worried about the ability of absorbing the pill (pretending a healthy condition) as much as the higher risk for vascular issues that is already present with the crohn. Therefore, she was suggesting the micropill? (micronor) which is progesteron only but need to be taken everyday at the very same hour. Have you considered the IUD mirena?
