Hello for about an year i am struggling with terrible diarrhea and pain in my lower abdomen. After clear colonoscopy, calprotectin and blood work , doctors sent me to psychiatrist. He prescribed me anafranil (clomipramine) -tricyclic antidepressant. What was very strange was that my pain and diarrhea were instantly gone as long as drank it(my diagnosis was colon iritabile - somatoform disorder). He says that crohn disease is excluded if all my symptoms are gone from the antidepressant. Could this be true? Or could this magic pill just mask and hide my symptoms while the disease is destroying my guts?

I am sorry. I misunderstood. I would keep pressing with the doctor until you got some answers. You might want a second opinion.

Were you tested for celiac disease? Tricyclic antidepressants relax the smooth muscles in the body, and that includes the intestines. I took amytriptyline for migraine prevention for a year, and it delayed my celiac diagnosis. Once I switched to a different preventive medication I developed severe abdominal pain, and was diagnosed with celiac disease within a month. The pain was masked by the amytriptyline.

Well i havent been tested for celiac disease. What are the symptoms? So strange for tricyclics to mask the symptoms completely :O. Somehow i doubt it is celiac... Before starting the tricyclic my symptoms had some periods of remission by itself, doesnt matter what i eat. I eat everything spicy foodd, drink alcochol and i have no problems my symptoms doesnt depend on anything. I tried gluten-free diet.. WHere was your abdominal pain located?
