I haven't gotten a chance to introduce myself just yet in the "story" sticky, but will do that shortly. For now I'm Benson and I've got Crohns, diagnosed in Sept 2006.

Anyways, for the last couple months of this current flare I've had a horrible taste in my mouth come and go and haven't gotten a chance to ask the dr about it yet because it's not nearly as agonizing as the other symptoms and it comes and goes. But it's really annoying because it's gross. It's like I ate something bad and it won't go away when it comes on. Even brushing my teeth or eating and drinking only masks it temporarily, once I swallow the food/drink or am done brushing I can still sense it. Gum is the only thing that's helped completely, and brushing comes the next closest. I'm fairly certain it's the disease doing it too (like all the other dozen issues that cropped up during this flare up)

Thanks in advance, nice to see I'm not alone in this hell.

hi benson, & welcome :)

i've not had that particular symptom, but as a wild guess i'd say if its detectable in your mouth, then i imagine it comes from your actual stomach (as opposed to small or large intestine). in which case, my first port of call would be to start taking pro-biotic yoghurts every day, which have proved many times to me to be helpful in settling stomach issues. that's assuming you can tolerate yoghurts, of course.

but if it doesnt settle soon, i'd recommend alerting your gp & see what they advise.

hope it goes soon, it sounds unpleasant for you :(

bacteria related...

hmmm, well that would make sense. It's akin to a bacterial-like issue seeing as how it's a bad taste. I don't do well with dairy but have lactase pills (still not sure if they even do anything). For a while I was eating yogurt in moderation daily despite it being full of lactose in hopes it would make a difference since I was willing to try anything, but stopped recently after getting out of the hospital again. I also was taking that "Digestive Advantage" until the hospital too, which had probiotics in it, but didn't go on it long enough for it's effect. After the hospital I pretty much wanted to just stick for the time being with the couple recommendations from the GI dr. to try to get this under control. Perhaps I'll try some moderate yogurt again or ask my GI when I call this next week (I'm supposed to check in).

Hi and welcome to the forums Benson!

I had the bad taste issue as well but it only happened when I had a small bowel obstruction. After the obstruction was passed and I was "clean" again the taste went away as well. I wouldn't say thats whats going on with you necessarily.

Look at your tongue and see if it has a yellowish color to it. If you have it then you probably have oral thrush which is basically a yeast infection in your mouth. Tell your doctor and they will probably put you on Nystatin but I found that crest mouthwash works better than that crap he gave me. Nystatin works but not very well, adding crest mouthwash I have gotten rid of most of mine and now I have a much less bad taste in my mouth.(wow that doesn't make much sense but it's late lol)

Hello Benson and Welcome -

I too have a nagging and persistent bad taste and chalked it up to the meds - speciafically the combo of ASA and pred (also on Imuran). I also wae about 2 times a week with a black tongue/cheeks - it isn't thrush, and my GI was baffled the last time I saw him (it had happened just that day) - but some research on my own and I found it can be symptomatic of dehydration and malnutrition (hmm, seemed logical). It does seem to come more after a worse than normal night sweat night.

I up my liquids and aim for more ensure drinks when it happens and it seems to help...but for this metallic taste, I haven't figured it out completely either but hope it is the drugs and when (if ever? *sigh*) I get to taper off the pred I hope it goes away.

Feel better!

Just an update, it was decided to be Thrush by the GI....yesterday I picked up some Nystatin and started it up, my mom says it'll be a few days at least before the taste is gone. I gotta swish it around for 2 minutes, swallow it, and repeat that, doing it 4 times a day. The stuff doesn't taste TOO bad, kinda like a hybrid cough medicine.

Doc says if he wanted to give somebody Thrush, he'd put them on all the meds I was already on....meaning I had a perfect recipe for such a fungal infection....great. Damn immunosuppresants...

Get a New Toothbrush!

Just a reminder for everybody who ever gets a yeast infection in your mouth: change your toothbrush when the yeast has cleared! And you should also do the same thing after a cold or any other sort of virus you may contract.

Hey, y'all! I'm back and I bring the yeast with me! Started the middle of last week. Interestingly I had been out of my probiotic cheese for three days when I realized this crap was back. Coincidence? Whatever, I'm back on the nystatin (yuck) but will do it because this infection is down into my esophagus and into my stomach. Swallowing is painful and when food hits my stomach it hurts too. Also interesting is that the typical signs of yeast, e.g., bad taste, coated tongue, etc., were not there. Sigh ...
