crohn's or uc

Hi everyone, i am new here. I didn't know where to post, so i chose here. My story is back in sept of 07, i got a c-diff infection from antibiotic clidamycin. I had it 2 times right after the other. Couldn't take the pills(flagyl) so had to stay in hospital. While there my dr. sent me to a surgeon, didn't know why and didn't want to go but i did. When i seen him, he made tests for me to do(colonoscopy and gastrotopy, spelling off). So on my last day of treatment for c-diff, i was scheduled for the tests. So in oct/07 got back results that i have mild colitis. Dr. didn't explain just prescribed cortinenema enemas. I looked it up and figured uc. I never had any of these symptoms before the c-diff that i have now. I did have some stomach issues but i figured becasue i am a very nervous person, but no issues with d. Now i get daily mild stomachaches, burning around anus, got a hemmi also. But still no real bad issues with d. Seen no blood yet in stool. I usually go once daily, sometimes a bit runny or formed. Have taken the enemas on and off, but no pills yet. I figure if it gets worse, then i will take the asacol. Also since then have sensitive skin, it gets red, not itchy. But do get some itchy spots(rash) Also after dx, dr. did blood tests and have to now take Vit B12 shots once a month. I feel so angry becasue i think the c-diff gave me this. Even though its mild right now, i'm scared one day it will get worse. The main question i have is if any one can read my pathology report, i know your not dr.'s but may know something about it. I just saw the surgeon 2 weeks for something else and decided to ask about the colits. He says i have mild colitis, but cannot for sure say ibd, maybe in remission or ibs. I was so confused. I showed my family dr. and he says i have ibd, but doesn't know which one. Now i pushing toward crohns becasue of the vit b12. I'm going to post my report now. Miscroscopic description Histololgical sections of speciman a and d(ascending colon biopsy and biopsy rectum) show acute colitis with cryptitis. There is no ecidence of crypt abscesses, granuloma or dysplasia. Specimen b and c (transverse colon biopsy and descending colon biospy)revealed superficial and deep llymphoplasmacytic infiltrate within the lamina propria. However, no glandular architectural distortion is seen. The findings of superficial and deep lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate with the lamina propria may indicate mild chronic resolving colitis. These findings are non-specific with differential diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease and resolving infectious colitis. Recommend clinical correlation.

Diagnosis: ascending colon biopsy(right colon) - mild acute colits Transverse colon biopsy-features suggestive of mild chronic colitis. Descending colon biopsy(left colon) - features suggestive of mild chronic colitis Biopsy rectum-acute colitis. That's it and i hope someone can help, even a little.

:welcome: Matty....Many infections of the intestines can mimic colitis and IBD. Especially C-Diff.....Also, no one knows for sure what triggers a normal bowel to become a victim of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I know shortly after I was extremely ill with food poisoning, my Crohn's symptoms began....The pathology reports do seem to indicate some form of IBD, at this stage very mild.....
....My advice would be to take the Asacol. It is a pretty benign medication with minor side effects. If you wait until "it" gets worse, you may need to be on stronger meds with stronger side effects....Try to nip it in the bud...Once you are feeling back to normal you can always stop the Asacol....Good luck. If you have any questions just ask.

Hi Matty!

I would be slightly obvious of me to say that they think you have ibd but not sure if it is Crohn's or UC, but you obviously know that from the title lol. As the histologist is unable to conclusively say if it is Crohn's or UC, they've asked the GI to compare the histological results with the symptoms you've been having to come up with a diagnosis that best fits. What has your GI said since the results of the colonoscopy? I know it's very frustrating to not know the cause of your symptoms but your GI would really be the expert in these kinds of scenarios. I hope you are feeling better soon. :)

I think what the report says is that you have had an inflammation of some kind, and whether it was caused by the c-diff or if it was a coincidental IBD then they cant be sure until it has healed.
C-Diff does cause a colitis which means inflammation of the colon, but so can UC.
The difference with UC tends to be the presence of ulcers or abscesses in the bowel wall which they havent really mentioned.....it kinda looks like you have had bowel inflammation caused by infection-ie the c-diff.

hopefully now the c-diff has been treated you will heal and recover.....i guess its waiting because if you recover then fall ill again with the same colitis type symptoms then they can maybe look into IBD. they gave you the enemas to treat the inflammation, which is also used to treat UC but its the same kind of inflammatory process so can be treated the same. just the c-diff one will resolve when the c-diff is treated, UC will not and will flare up again.

I hope it was just a once off and that you escape without any IBD....fingers crossed for you anyway x

thanks everyone for the welcomes and replies, they are really appreciated. With having no firm dx, i quess i probably will have to have another colon test, which i really hate to do, but if no choice, i will. As for the asacol, one day i feel to take and the next i don't. I'm really not a pill taker unless a must. The only pills i take are periet for my hiatus hernia. So far the most bothersome is my burning bum, it feel burning around and inside to also feeling a bit sore further by the bum bone. I don't think it's my hemmi because this started before the hemmi. Am going to see dr. to check into this, its been going on and off since dx with mild colitis. I'll write back when i get some info on it. Thanks again replying.
