At the ripe old age of 60 I just got diagnosed! It was done with a blood test for antibodies for Crohn's that is patented and done by only one lab, Prometheus.
I've have nausea and diarrhea and abdominal pain off and on all my life. Anorexic as a teen, I was not afraid of getting fat, food made me sick. In my 20s I was told there was nothing wrong with me, it was in my head. In my 30s the line was it was irritable bowel syndrome, but they didn’t really know what it was or what to do about it, but since I was a teacher it was probably caused by stress. At 35 I was diagnosed with osteoporosis and it was determined that I had mal-absorption syndrome, but they didn’t know why. When the arthritis got bad I started on NASIDs. When drugs came out for osteoporosis I also took those, the combination of both these drugs ate my stomach and I wound up with stomach surgery 2 years ago at age 58. All the time my weight went up and down as the nausea, diarrhea and occasional vomiting came and went.
I’m sure I have a mild case of Crohn’s, otherwise an obstruction would have put me in the hospital and, hopefully, it would have been identified a long time ago. As of 3 weeks ago, when I got my diagnosis, I'm on an anti-inflammatory drug that has gotten rid of most of the nausea and has cut down on the diarrhea. I’m learning more about diet than I had by just trial and error over the years. I can’t believe that a disease that has affected my whole life is just now being treated.
When my doctor told me I had Crohn's he told me that at least I knew it wasn't in my head; I told him that I never thought it was.
Right now we are trying to get the inflammation under control. It is a problem throughout my body, not just the bowels. I also have asthma and get migraines which some studies link to Crohn’s besides the arthritis and osteoporosis. I'm waiting to do another jaw X-ray at the dentist to see if my jaw is healing up from an abscess so I can have my next reclast infusion for the osteoporosis since I can't take oral meds for that any more. All because Crohn's went undiagnosed and untreated.
Having said all that, I am happy to finally have an answer, and to be able to do something about it.

:welcome: Moggs!! Wow that was way too long and sufferings through the years! It started with my in my teens and mysterious flu bugs but 40 years??? I was told the same as you, it was all in my head. What is up with that?? Like we like to suffer? NOT. You are lucky of not getting obstructions, those I have had and there is no mistaking the pain when you have one. My family is also affected by IBS my sister, brother and myself. Uncles who have IBS...list goes on.

Thank you so much for sharing your story, it will help alot of poeple here who have been told there is nothing wrong with them. What meds are you on now?

No one wants Crohns but finally an answer??? Would of been better earlier. Glad you have joined our community!!!

Thanks for the welcome. I'm on lialda; so far that's it. We want to avoid prednisone because my osteoporosis is pretty bad. Lialda has gotten rid of most of the nausea and has cut down the diarrhea, so there is progress and my weight is starting to stabilize.

Hi Moggs, and welcome to the family. :) I'm so glad you were finally given an answer. Now you will get the treatment you need and deserve!

I can't believe it took so long to get diagnosed!!!! My husband says that they call it Medical PRACTICE for a reason! They're all just practicing. :ylol2:

I wonder... have you been told of the biologics? They might help with several of your problems. I'm on Remicade and it treats my UC, my psoriasis, and my psoriatic arthritis. It's great to be able to kill 3 birds with 1 stone.

Anyway, I'm glad you joined us. You're definitely in the right place for support and encouragement. Make yourself at home here.

Shocked @ reading your story Moggs. Its atrocious & not good enough especially being told its in your head. That is damn insulting.
I hope they can find something that will sort out your crohns without messing with your other problems.
Best Wishes
Grant

Jessi, thanks for the post. I see my doctor next week. I've been keeping a food journal along with my weight and the number of bathroom visits per day. This week I added the grams of protein I'm getting in; the doctor wanted me to get "enough", but didn't say how much that was. A dietician said my first target is 50g which seems like a lot, I was eating 1 egg (8g) a day and thought I was doing well. The biologics look intriguing. He said I have to give lialda 6 weeks to 3 months to work, ...seems like a long time.

Yeah, it's a bit of a wait for Lialda to kick in and do its job. It was the same for me with Asacol. Fortunately, the prednisone worked immediately. so I just had to deal with all the garbage that steroids dish out, instead.
