Hi, Ive just had surgery and have a stoma bag for life.

I want to remain healthy and was told to go on a low fibre diet. It doesnt sound very healthy, does any one know what foods are good to eat?

Ive been told to eat white bread not wholemeal and cut out lots of fruit and veg, sounds weird to me.

Thanks in advance for any replys:rosette2:

I started on a low res diet and over the course of a year - have introduced other foods.
Some veggies just exit in the same shape they entered. I eat them for the pleasurable taste - no other reason.
I still don't eat some fruit and veg though - in case it gets stuck.
But I'm a lot more adventurous now.

Have a look at the juicing threads on this forum. You can eat tons of fruit and veg but juicing takes out the fibre.

Hi Suga, Samboi pretty much nails it actually. Low residue foods are great but how strict you are, just depends on you- there isn't a golden rule which everyone follows. For example, I can eat just about anything but I will stay away from popcorn and raw vegetables. I don't really eat nuts either, but if they are in a dessert or something it's fine. Corn on the cobb I am scared to eat, but if corn is in soup it's usually ok. After surgery though, I was certainly more strict than I am now. Best thing to do eat smalll portions of any food you are unsure of, and then see how you feel. Your output can certainly be slower due to the increased fiber/ruffage, but that's not always a bad thing. As long as things are coming out smoothly and not causing you pain you should be in good shape. Drink lots of fluids if you have any concern, this will help things flow through better.
