Do you use a probiotic?

Crohn's Disease Forum

Help Support Crohn's Disease Forum:

Our GI said it can't hurt, but there's not much to suggest it provides a huge benefit. The one time she really did recommend it was when my son had to go on antibiotics for a throat infection. We got the probiotics from the pharmacist, but did not need a prescription.

We use Culturelle and Florastor whenever my daughter takes antibiotics, but it was our idea, not our GI's (but she OK'd them when we asked about them).

I've always gotten mixed messages about this. GI says they are a waste of money, his nurse said they're a good idea. He surgeon insisted and his ped is meh about it. He does take one because I feel even is its not necessarily helping his Crohn's per se, it may be keeping him healthy in other ways. My non-IBDer is also on probiotics and never catches all the goop going around his elementary school, so I'm a believer.

We take a probiotic. Yellow lid and stored in the fridge. I can't remember the brand.

My son's GI said he should take it. And since he is taking so many pills already, what is one more

I think it makes a difference for me. It might be all in my head but I think the probiotic helps me fight against little colds.

My son was on Culturelle for a long time, easy to mix in. Didn't seem to help any. Now we do VSL#3 after he's been on antibiotics. For myself, I take Primal Defense weekly. Seems to help more for IBS than IBD, but also doesn't hurt any.

My son takes Florastor when he's on antibiotics. I've been wanting him to take culturelle but I don't think he does. None of his doctors have expressed an opinion, but I don't see any negatives with trying and seeing if they help in any way.

When I went to Mayo I was on VSL3.. The Dr there said there were no studies that showed VSL benefited Crohns patients.. If you're on an antibiotic I've heard that it's a good idea to use a probiotic, but that's it.

I agree

We used Culturelle a long time, but now I've become more of a minimalist. She uses it only when on antibiotics now.

What is ProDefense and how does it help your IBS?

E recently started VSL #3 and I am not sure it has helped his Crohn's at all. It has helped his acne tremendously though so he wants to stay on it. It hasn't hurt at all and he has reacted negatively to some probiotics.
