Duodenal bypass? Anyone?

I was diagnosed with Duodenal Crohn's in 2000 after being misdiagnosed for the previous 22 years. Now enough scar tissue has formed leaving three strictures at and just below the duodenum and another further along the jejunum. GI Doc is suggesting bypass and resection surgery. I met the surgeon four years ago and he said I wasn't ready yet but now the time has come.

Questions are: Has anyone here gone through this surgery? How was the recovery? And how long were you disease free after the procedure?

Info is hard to find as most bypass surgeries are for the very obese (typically not a problem for Crohn's sufferers) so any information or experiences you have would be helpful.

Thanks, Tony

Welcome to the forum Tony!

Duodenal Crohn's is a bit less common compared to other forms (mostly Crohn's of the ileum). I have heard the procedure you are mentioning is not much different than any other IBD related resection or bypass, but I do not have any specific advice for you. Sorry I could not be of more help.

Hi, I haven't had a duodenal bypass/ resection as my crohns is at the illeum site, however, I have had a resection at the illeum site and a laparotomy. Recovery time was approx 3 months (although I was also left with a temporary stoma) it was 4 months before my stoma settled down. At the mo I feel much better for the surgery, fingers crossed. Hope this is of some help.
