Hi all,
I have liquid "d" 6-8 day. I wake up and have to run to the loo.
Immodium and Lomotil don't seem to do anything at all besides give me bad gas pains. The GI thinks it is from my resection last year and not from active cd. But she seems puzzled as to why nothing is working. I even take the Cholesteramine (sp) powder 2x a day. No change. Is there something else I should be asking for? Something I should try. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Barbara

My only thoughts are that u may have developed a tolerance to the meds. I used Imodium regularly for D and became intolerant to it after a while, it helped to stop using it for a while and then only take it under extreme circumstances. Same with the Cholestyramine (Questran). I tried Codeine Phosphate and that worked (a bit too well sometimes). I dont take any now tho as i have strictures and obstructions are a big problem, i love a loose BM! :)

BEFORE TAKING THIS ADVICE TALK TO YOU GASTRO OR NATUROPATH!!!

IF YOU HAVE A NARROW COLON FIBRE CAN BLOCK AND KILL YOU>

Now that said I BM about the same amount as you and I have found some relief with psyllium husk fibre. (specifically). Psyllium husk fibre BINDS stool together and absorbs mucus/bile etc. It also keeps the "exit" from getting raw.

Remember broccoli can block some peoples gut - ensure you talk to your doctor before trying psyllium husk fibre and START SMALL (a teaspoon a day) and have it with lots of water.

one last thing - it doesn't substantially decrease BM's (maybe one less/day) but it does make the experience less urgent and more pleasant. I'm up to about 4 tablespoons/day.

Thanks for the responses. The gi wants me to try entocort again.
But since she insists that the D is not from active Crohns how could that help?
She did not respond to my request for the codein phosphate. I am confused.

Is Psylium husks the same as questran?

Yeh that is confusing as Entocort is indicated for mild to moderate active Crohn's. When did your GI last test your blood? perhaps your CRP (inflammation) levels are slightly elevated?

psyllium husk fibre is a natural product but do consult your GI before using it as you've had a resection. It is not the same as questran. more info here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psyllium_seed_husks
