erythematous mucosa

Hello everyone,

I have a question. I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy yesterday. I have been having a lot of gas issues and pain in my lower abodomen. They found erythematous mucosa in the esophagous, stomach, terminal ileum, ascending colon and sigmoid colon. I also have a hiatal hernia and mild diverticulosis. The doctor took biopsies of the erythematous mucosa and said he thinks the tests will come out clear for crohn's and UC. However, I am fairly worried. Based on the pictures there is alot of inflamation and even some spots that have blood. I am only 32 yrs old and did take accutane in the past, which is the reason why the doctor wanted to do the colonoscopy.

My question is, can erythematous mucosa in the colon area be caused by something other than crohn's or UC? Also, can erythematous mucosa be cured?

I think it is a sign of irritation, which could happen from things like infections as well as Crohn's or UC. Maybe the diverticulosis could be contributing? And the mucosa in the esophagus could be from the hiatal hernia causing acid reflux?

As for curing it, I guess it depends on the cause!

Hi Rebecca, Thanks for your response.

To be more specific, if there is inflamation of the intestines (mucosa), can it be managed by meds? Meaning, can medications cause it to not get worse or to even get better?

Like I said, it depends on the cause. There are meds that will reduce the inflammation (like steroids). But if you had an infection, then you would get better results from treating that as steroids suppress the immune system- making an infection worse.

Think of it like a fire. You could try and put it out by chucking water on it, but if it turns out to be a chip pan fire you will make things much worse!
