I use to weight lift 2x a day 6 days a week. I love to work out but sit ups, crunches, and chin up cause a small flair and a couple of days of bathroom trips. Does anybody have any ideas about loosing a spare tire? I know most of you have the severe weight loss I did at first nearly 50 pounds in three months, but they had me doing a ton of protein drinks and now I have belly fat. I hate it. I care about my physique.
 
Really the best way to burn fat is through cardio. If jogging, walking, biking or an elliptical doesn't work for you then swimming is the best because its low impact and the resistance of the water gives a great workout.
 
I can't do anything that jostles my stomach (crunches would kill me!). My old favourites like running and skipping are now "out."

I'm at the YMCA about 4 days/week right now doing:

1. Spin class (indoor stationary road bikes) - but I have to be careful not to lean too far forward or to engage my core too much (else...pain!)
2. Deep water fitness class
3. Arm and leg exercises on the weight machines that I selected with the help of a YMCA fitness trainer specifically to avoid putting pressure on my abdomen
4. Balance and flexibility exercises (using the BOSU, for example)

I'm also bicycling and walking and using 5 lb free weights at home.

Excersise

I walk everyday 0.87 miles according to the pedometer. Walking is the only thing I do, I'm afraid to lift weights with a Illeostomy cause I don't want to tear anything or get a hernia.

Eventually I will increase my walks to twice a day
 
Its very simple, when your intake of calories is superior to the amount of calories spent, then your body stores the extra calories as fat. It is is not precise to say "do cardio, do elliptical, do this" because there are man other dependant variables. Also if you reduce your calories too much and do lots of cardio then your body will react, it will react by slowing your BMR. Meaning your metabolism will slow down and thus you will burn less calories.

Personally I find stating that swimming is better then running or elliptical is better the skip roping etc is not really true either as far as fat loss in concerned. Again its all about calories in versus calories out.
 
two good exercises for weight loss are sprints (if you can run).

Just run as fast as you can, then when you get tired jog. When you regain energy run as fast as you can. Start off doing it like 5 or 10 minutes and increase the time when you can.

The other thing I purchased it the ab coaster which works really well and takes some of the strain off your belly. This machine is great for beginners, but also allows experience people to add weight to it. This will increase your resistance. I found one on craigs list for cheap.
 
look up HIIT / interval training.

Ideal for fat loss, quickly - but not for the faint hearted. If you want any more tips, also weight lifting feel free to PM me. I've been lifting a while, my Grandad was a bodybuilder and a fitness model, passed on to my dad and on to me!
 
IMO, all good pieces of advice. Any of them will do well, but the most effective for time involved and muscle retained (that will help keep belly fat off long-term) would be the sprints or HIIT (interval training), as they amplify your metabolism more than steady state cardio for hours after the exercise ceases and use the highest number of muscle fibers (using muscle fibers notifies the body to retain their size during catabolic/hypocaloric states where you're low on calories during/after excercise and dieting, so more of what goes will be fat). High intensity cardio has also been shown to even target visceral fat (belly fat) more.

I'd still add (if you can and only if you can safely) some sort of weight lifting into it, as it'll ensure you lose more fat as "weight" comes off. When you start burning/cutting calories, your body will take "xx amount of calories" from somewhere. Your ability comes in when you can influence the source. You can cut calories and do cardio, but you will still lose some muscle in that weight (again, you want to keep as much muscle as you can to fend off regaining any fat). High protein/low carb nutrition will help some, high intensity cardio (HIIT/sprints/circuit training) will help more, and weights in the mix will help the most. There are countless studies showing how more fat comes off in such endeavors when resistance training is in the equation along with cardio and diet modifications. Lastly, weight lifting releases the most testosterone into surges, and it is fat's enemy and muscle's friend.

Ok, all you guys are young!! Now, my point of view :lol: stretching everyday is important and I use the Gazelle by little Tony. It is low impact and helps every aspect of your body, even if you have sore knees etc. When you have Osteoarthritis you have to move. This low impact machine helps alot, I also have a stationary bike and tread mill but you have to get on it. I was told many years ago (some of you were just babies then) that you should keep your intestines exercised, like any other muscle or it wont perform as well. Weight was another issue (I have too much sshhhhhhhhhhh) but I was also told most Crohnies should keep a minimum of 10 lbs beyond their normal weight incase they flare and end up losing alot weight and they cant operate when you are underweight, too risky. Just my input, I am back to my Gazelle low impact machine everyday, winter is coming and we all tend to let our selves go. Right Bens?
 
Interval training is excellent but you need good stamina before trying that. If youre not used to running, 3-4 short sprints and your knackered. Id start off slowly jogging 1st of all.
Maybe a punchbag? I wear 16oz gloves, then throw jabs as light and fast as i can for 1min, skip for another, then repeat until tired. If you can do that ok then add 1min of heavy bag work. If you cant get to a punchbag a tin of beans or something in each hand and punch into air works just as well
 
Personally, Pen, I can't add weight to any "normal weight" as I don't have one. I have a goal bodyfat and weight combo, and perpetually strive for it. I still lose like 10 pounds a week if I get really bad, and 40 or so in 3 months time, etc...and it takes forever to gain any of it back in the right way, I've done it 3 times now.

As for the winter, I lose weight in the winter because that's usually my "bad season" and I've rarely been able to work out. I was 147 in 2007/08's winter, and about 160 last 2 years. Now I'm up around 200ish. Being an exception is frustrating. If I lose fat on purpose, they automatically chalk it up to a bad flareup. If I gain muscle, they assume I'm "all better" when I still go 15+ times a day.

Btw, it's "Tony Little" but I suppose you can mock him and call him little Tony. lol :D

I'd also like to add for the weight loss advice to find a sport you enjoy, especially one you can do solo, like basketball (mine)...swimming, biking, soccer, boxing, football ("American")...and it won't seem like a chore. The time passes quicker and you're more likely to do it when "scheduled".

Everyone has had really good advice so far, but my advice is simple walking.
I have been trying to get in shape recently and the walking has been the most beneficial yet as it works so many muscle groups.
Like Earthangel, I have an ostomy so some exercises are dangerous because of the risk of a hernia. I have also had Crohns disease for 14 years so I know that sometimes it is hard to do much strenuous exercise. Exercise is easy and relaxing and it is also easy to adjust to what you can do at the time. Even if you are in a mild flair, you can probably take short walks until you build up your strength again. Of course, when you are in a bad flair, it is pretty hard to do much of anything and during those times we all need to rest and give ourselves a little slack.
I think walking is over-looked because it is so common and easy to do that people think that it isn’t real exercise. Trust me, if you walk long enough, often enough, at a brisk pace, it can make a huge difference in your appearance all over.
