Hiya-
I was thinking about exercise now that my nasty flare-up is subsiding thanks to a loop ileostomy. Thing is, Crohns has places several impediments here: weak and achy knee and ankle joints, sore and severe anal fissures, limited energy, and the limitations inherent with a stoma. Atm I'm just doing some walking which was out of the question until recently. Suggestions?

I'd suggest sticking with walking until the aches, fatigue, etc. subsides. Once the flare is over and the doctor gives the okey add things to your activity.

Are you thinking sports, gym, etc? I'm all for those things. I've remained active all my life. Adjustments need to be made while flaring. Get the doctors go ahead.

I agree walking is a great starter exercise and until you can get to a point where pain doesn't interfere I would overly push it. Since joint pain is an Extra Intestinal Manifestation of CD and depending on the type it can run either concurrently or independently of CD flares it might be a good idea to see a rheumatologist if you haven't already, since there could be a difference in treatment of the joint flares dependent on the type.

Also they could px PT that would provide exercise that could help with your situation.

Good luck!

I was with you until px PT! But good points...I'll continue with walks for the timebeing. My uncle is a GP and incidentally recommended I see a rheumatologist to try and figure out how to get the most use out of my joints as I damaged them by trying to take up running before I started flaring about 3 years ago and they're still not great- though at the time they were very painful. I'll talk to my gastro consultant when I see him in a couple week about a referral to a rheumatologist. Ta

Haha sorry px is prescribe or prescription and PT is physical therapy.

My son has CD but he also has JSpA which is juvenile spondylarthropathy(a form of arthritis) that can occur along side CD. There are other forms as well and often the joint pain can show years before the CD(crohns disease) does. So always important to get it checked out.
